Right / Wrong (ad nauseum)
    #7538235 - 10/20/07 03:47 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

There's this tendency to say

"You are right"
When it might be better to say
"The idea you presented seems accurate to me"

Quote:

Person 1: "You're wrong."

Person 2: "I am wrong? Fuck you buddy!  Your mother was wrong!"

or

Quote:

Person 1: "I think the idea you presented may not be accurate."

Person 2: "I...wait, what?"

The failure to make the distinction between ideas and the mechanisms of consciousness by which we interact with them can lead to a lot of time and energy expended merely in defense of the ego.

The map is not the territory.
The map is not the territory.
The map is not the territory.

I agree.  What you're saying is 100% true.  Thankfully I'm one of those people who understands this so I don't need to work on it.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Everything is an opinion. I like to say "IMO". To others I like to say "Prove it"

If 100 people can all be said to share an opinion, what prompts 98 of them suddenly forget that it is still just an opinion and not an infallible decree handed down from God itself and woven into the very fabric of their personality?

Patterning. Once we come up with something that seemed to work we are loathe to give it up. Humans don't do well with change and uncertainty.

Exactly, It is the built in motivational force in human existence. Nothing happens outside of it.

This reminds me of a moment where i realized that in order to function in society we hinge our survival instincts on the acquisition of little pieces of paper, the value of which is determined by Big Daddy who Knows What He Is Doing- so we better listen or we'll suffer a miserable life and die a premature and agonizing death.

this why the freedom From Religion Foundation is so piercingly ironic.... if they only knew what dupes they were they'd start a new group: Freedom From the Freedom From Religion Foundation
