So I went to gather some herbs from a nearby field, and found this growing with others in a cow patty. First shrooms I have ever seen like this in cow poo up here. Does anyone know of any actives in this area of the country? Thanks for your help.

Habitat: Cow poo.
Gills: Dark brown, attached.
Stem: Brown/Tan, fragile, hollow, breaking and splitting easily.
Cap: Caramel nipple, to yellow/brown outside
Spore print: brown/red.
Bruising: No noticeable color changes from bruising.
Location: Picked in Wisconsin.

Looks absolutely nothing like Cubensis. Probably poisonous. +10 for the thorough ID write up though.

I don't know of anything like that which grows in dung.
Was it growing directly from the pile of dung, or maybe the nearby dung was just a coincidence?
I can tell you that it is nothing edible or active.
Some habitat shots would help.
Nice pic of the spores, I think I see a germ pore on one end which makes me suspect that this is Stropharia aurantiaca. Does that seem like a good match?

Search the forums for the user wiscokid.
You also have active Gymnopilus sp. and Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Hah! I have the gyms right here in my back yard, on a few logs, and even on the side of my barn! I also have g. ventricosus, similar but not the same. Thanks for the "wiscokid" info.
The shrooms were definitely taken FROM a cow patty... not to say they came from the cow patty in mycelial terms, but they were all growing up from the patty. The pictures are not accurate, they look very much like some cubensis I have picked... but no bluing. Habitat was in the nook of a hill, getting mainly morning sun, very little late afternoon, sunset. Also, the gills are NOT attached... sorry for the misinfo.
CAN YOU SAY KING BOLETE? MUAHAHAHA... MIDWEST BEAUTY, HOW YOU SHINE!

on what basis do you identify the gyms from your yard?
and what's this business about a king bolete?

we "WI" blabber because we forgot the camera, and like to share mis-info about the huge king bolete that never was because they aren't supposed to be here and we ate them. However, however, next year they will come in the same place, under the same trees. Maybe a camera can do the trick for those damn blabber mouths!!!

Until then, and unfortunately without microscopy pics, g. spectabilis. I can't wait to hear what everyone says. TRY AND LOOK THESE UP ON THE INTERNET! LOOK AT THE MIS-INFO!!! LOOK ON SHROOMERY!!! WHAT A MISTAKEN SHROOM! Sorry for the caps but people still believe Omphalotus illudens glows in the dark. Hah!

Damn... I just have too see that myself. I have heard many stories, but have never seen this phenomenon. Not once. However, I have seen some things people wouldn't believe. Maybe this "strain" is coming to an evolutionary mutation... however there are no pictures, only stories. Here is a good summary of how I feel:

PS: Alan you are a nice man. Stropharia aurantiaca does not match... by geographical location "probability", and the fact that it was from dung. I am checking out the possibility of me having sighted Panaeolus subbalteatus, which I think I may have. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Yea I didn't think so.

Not with brown/red spores.

I saw that picture on google search. The ONLY one. Look up anything else in the world... rabid albino one legged monkeys, and you'll get at least 3 pictures.
Panaeolus subbalteatus was a side note, a possibility of weeks ago. They look almost like "ink caps", can't remember their "proper" name.. when they are almost mature and then rained on.
