Vermiculite up or down?
    #7536172 - 10/19/07 04:20 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I just put some cakes in my incubator and i read that you need to have the verm. side facing up just like the way you let the jar colonize, but then i saw pictures with the mushrooms growing down sorta and you can see the verm side is down. Im probably over complicating this but what has proven to be the best position? Also i just bought a pressure cooker it doesn't have a pressure gauge thing is tht ok?

Your PC should be OK, check and see if it has a label or anything indicating that it cooks at 15PSI, this seems to be what most of them are set to.

I'm going to attempt to decode this. Are you talking about the Vermiculite Barrier in PF Jars to prevent contamination? If so it goes right under the lid, therefore on top of the cake.

The reason the vermiculite side was facing down when the mushrooms are growing is because you put your cakes upside down in the fruiting chamber.

If that's not the answer you were looking for I don't know what the hell you're trying to convey.

It depends on what pressure cooker you bought. You don't need a pressure gauge. Some PC's only go up to 10 or 12 P.S.I., which will likely be sufficient if you are only using the PF-Tek.

your getting yourselk mixed up over nothing, when u make your jars, dry verm goes at the top.

But when u birth the cake, u turn it upside down, hence the dry verm (or whats left of it once you clean most of it off) is at the bottom

Yeah, that was your contamination barrier when they were in the jar. You should rinse/wipe it off before putting the cake in the FC. I'd also dunk and roll.

sorry bout the confusion. the verm layer for contamination prevention is what i meant. I did brush most of that off, so what i need to have is the verm side in contact with the perlite?

No. Use a jar lid or some other barrier to keep the cake separate from the perlite.
