failed spore print

making a print looked like one of the easiest proceedures to follow on this site, and i pinned two small caps to a peice of foil with a cup over them and a cotton ball slightly tilting the glass (used versus the freshly laundered towel) i left in for aprox 22 hours, which i thought might be a mistake, and then when i uncovered the caps, (5 mins ago) they were black and green, appeared slimy but i didnt touch, just prodded with the other pin once one was dumped in the trash. oh, and no spore print underneath. if i looked at the right angle i could see a damp spot from the cap, but no black or purple at all.
Is it possible to use a cap which is too small?
Should the caps be dried first/left to sit with more airflow? ( i heard a drier cap prevents spores from sticking to gills)
What did i do wrong?

there should be a print there. did u wait for the cap to flatten out enough.
I have never taken prints yet but on my last batch I was late on picking. cap had flattened compltly and spores everywhere.
when they drop spores. the drop tons.
try again. maybe it was an unlucky fruit.
u can trying using a bit of descicent to stop the cap rotting.
Ok i checked on a shroom i was printing that i forgot about, the shroom had dried complelty, but no print, i picked it after the veil broke and not when it started to flatten,
So im thinking maybe you pick the shroom to early

hmmm. i picked after the veil broke obviously, and they werent totally flat. one was very rounded while the other was nearly flat. could i have picked too late? there were already some spores on the stems and broken veils. i have one shroom ready to print (I think), it is almost completely flat, and has a fairly dark spore print on itself.
should i prepare for print as soon as veil breaks? or when?

It is also possible that the caps you printed didn't sporulate so there were no spores to be printed.

i just checked on a print that i left for 11 hours, it flattened out more after i set it out, and i put some epson salt in with it to help fight rotting.
there was a very faint few lines of spores, in the shape of the gills, but hardly anything. the stem of this cap has very dark spore marks on it. did i get to this one too late?

You want to use larger sized caps for your prints, small caps dont sporulate very well at all.
For printing I suggest you sterilize a rubbermaid container, wet a paper towel with peroxcide, place the sheet of tinfoil on the peroxcide soaked paper towel (shiny side down against it) quickly run a flame over it, poor peroxcide on it and set down the cap, fold the foil over and crink the edges over it, place it in the pre-sterilized tupperwear container and wait....
The peroxcide evaporates fairly quick leaving the foil sterile as the spores drop, 24 hours later simply remove the cap, cutt out foil with the spores and place in a baggy.... you can then create a spore syringe by directly injecting sterile water into the baggy, sealing up the seal and mushing the water around with your fingers until all spores are off the foil...
Ive been doing all my prints like this for the last two years, sent out hundreds upon hundreds and ive only ever had 2 complaints from people about a possibly bad print.... Two years and hundreds of prints later, its a method that has proved invaluable.

Wait till the cap flattens out. Lay the cap on foil, set in resessed dish covered with tyvek. Remove cap 24 hours later and replace paper towel for 24 more hours then seal prints. Wait for the cap to flatten completly. Once it flattens it will release the mother load and this is what you want. It may drop a few spores as it is flattening out but still wait. Once it is flat, remove with sterile instrument and proceed.

the best piece of advice i can give to someone new to printing, is that i did it for the first time less then a month ago, and i now have about 10 NICE DARK prints on foil, and another 5 or 6 on paper (coz they look nice) And the easiest way to see if they're ready to print, is look for any signs of spores dropping yet, (darker stem mostly) and as soon as you see it, take the shroom and print as per tek, there'll be plenty more spores there for printing with, and doing that you know you havn't waited too long, or have cut them early. just my thoughts, it works for me, but each to thier own.
