dunk and roll

so when i roll my cakes in verm do i need to sterilise it first or can i do it straight from the bag ?
as the myc has defences

If it is a new unopened bag i just use it straight but once it is open things land in it so i bake to sterilize just in case.

well mine has been opened but seal it with a clip
if i was to bake it how long would i do it for and what heat as ive heard verm can melt
also would putting boiling water do the job? thanks

sterilization is less important in the fruiting phase. The MYC has already taken hold of the majority of the food.

I've done it both ways and haven't had any problems with my cakes when I didn't bake the verm. But, if you want to, you can put the dry verm on a cookie sheet and then place it in the oven on 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes. That will be plenty of time to kill off anything that may be on it, and putting it in the oven for that amount of time and temperature will not melt your verm. Hope this helps. Good luck

Verm does not melt untill around 900 degrees and only after expanding to (up to) 11 times its original size.

well after getting my first contaminated cake, which also happened to be my first rolled cake

i would advise that you sterilize your verm, and be sure that you don't let any nutrients get onto it (IE: miracle grow in MG perlite)
