alrighty, i think i have found this mushroom species after IDing it on this website.
http://www.geocities.com/psilocyanide/musho.html - Near the middle/bottom there is a pic.
After searching around on the net for more pics tho, i read that this mushrooms is usually only found in Maine. I am in AL. Could i have found this mushroom? The description is almost identical, and the pic on that site and the mushies that i picked are in fact identical. But my question is... could i have found this mushroom in AL? How strict are the "habitats" when they specify states?
There were many lil ones of these that i left in the field. Hopefully it will rain soon, so i they will grow. lll try and get some pics then.

yea its definately not cool down here. One other quick question. After seeing good pics of pan subbs, these things are quite different from the pix. How much can the same species vary in color, size, etc. in different habitats. Like, would a pan subb down here in the middle of an open field look much different than a pan subb in Canada found in the woods? get my drift?

A buddy of mine found about 15 of these last year(in Georgia), we've checked the spot several times and we can't find them anymore, so yes... A rare thing.

I have found them this summer here in Canada...it has also been pretty warm, don't find as many as subbs and casters though.

Panaeolus papilionaceus is close to if not the same as panaeolus subbalteatus. IT is not the Panaeolus sphinctrinus in Paul Stamets Book Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World which Paul labeled as P. papilionaceus.
The Maine shrooms are all panaeolus papilionaceus and are a synonym for P. subbalteatus.
Used annually by Maine Lobster Fisherman in a festival.
mj At least that is what Dick Schultes told me. He had info but died beforwe I ever got any form him in written form. Maybe a note or two in my files.

I think from what I have read, pictures I have seen and from what I have picked...they are very similar, possibly a different strain of subbs...but there seem to be differences. The caps don?t flatten out as much as the subbs, they seem to be smaller and blue a little more, even on the cap in some instances...I dunno, these are just my observations.

As compared to these subbs and casters.
