What's wrong with my computer?
    #7534273 - 10/19/07 06:26 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

This has been happening for a long time

I threw this box together last summer. I've never successfully encoded a DVD with this machine, it completely locks up about halfway through.

Sometimes it will lock up out of nowhere (completely seize, no response whatsoever) when I'm watching a movie. Even going into my Movies folder can cause it to lock up sometimes.

This isn't common, but it happens. Does this sound like a RAM issue or a video card issue? Or neither?

Sounds like a RAM issue...

Download and run memtest86 on your machine. It should come back PERFECT...if there are any errors your RAM is likely bad.

Memtest86+ is a great application to use. At that point if there's not an issue with the RAM, then it's weird and might also indicate an issue with either software or hardware.

It could be software related...but the fact that it happens most often when playing/encoding a movie, both memory intensive processes, and locks up completely screams RAM issue to me.

Boom, if you want to check if it's a software issue go to

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer

and click on the "System" link to your left. Check the log (if there is one) for the time when you last crashed.

Ok thanks for the responses guys

I think I have memtest in my grub boot menu, I'll check it out and report back here.

There are no events in the event viewer for the crashes, the OS seems to be unaware of the failure, it just completely freezes

Yeah, hardware issue...and most likely RAM.

Do you have more than one stick?

I have one stick, its 1 gig

I have a lot to do on the computer today, so I cancelled the memtest for now

but, the info is as follows:

Chipset nForce4 SLI intel edition - FSB: 200mHz - type: DDR II

RAM: 133 mHz (ddr 266)/ cas: 4-4-4-12 / single channel (64 bits)

It seems to me that I have the wrong RAM, perhaps. I could have sworn that this RAM was DDRII. I think the speed couold be wrong

yes, ddr2 should be faster than 266mhz, more like 400mhz+, also, your FSB doesn't seem right for a mobo that runs ddr2...

peace

Yeah check the label on the RAM stick...

If it's wrong try telling your BIOS what type RAM you have.

There should be a few settings in there somewhere for RAM, where you can set the speed manually.

I messed with it in  the bios,  made it the right speed, but it's acting real bad with these settings...blue screened at one point, but it froze before it could say anything, just blue...

I ordered this RAM, it seems to bethe right kind, this should work better

Yeah, I'm thinking you could have a bad stick there...best thing to do is leave it running memtest86 over night.

Hmmmmm well

I ordered the two new sticks, and I get stuck before the bios is even called, long beeps, and the post # is c1, which apparently is a memory problem.

I tried one by itself, works fine.  The other by itself, causes these beeps and errors.  I guess I got a bad stick?  Son of a bitch... :crankey:
