Mr. Softee driver sold drugs at Bowne Park: Police

A Mister Softee driver whose jingle was so irritating that it even caught the attention of Mayor Michael Bloomberg was arrested for allegedly dishing out a lot more than ice cream, police said.

Authorities said an undercover narcotics sting led to the Oct. 6 arrest of a Mister Softee driver , who they say was allegedly selling cocaine and marijuana out of his truck at Bowne Park in Flushing. Police did not release the name of the alleged dealer, but said they were led to the ice-cream truck driver after several residents complained he had been loudly and incessantly blasting his jingle to the ire of the neighborhood.

Following the arrest, children in Bowne Park were granted an unusual treat. Because the truck was impounded, police doled out free ice cream to avoid being left with a meltdown in the police lot.

One resident, who declined to be named, said residents had tried everything to rid themselves of the irritating ice-cream dealer, calling everyone from 311 to Mister Softee's headquarters in New Jersey with no luck.

"The guy was a constant scourge," the resident said. "He was the kind of guy that when you told him to turn down the music, he turned it up."

One resident, known only as "Eddie from Queens," took his message straight to the top, complaining in a call to the mayor's weekly radio show on WABC Aug. 31. Last week after the driver's arrest, Bloomberg joked that the streets surrounding "Eddie's" neighborhood would be a great deal quieter.

"So, Eddie, I don't know if you can take credit for it, but you can have a smile on your face, and you shouldn't hear that Mister Softee guy again," Bloomberg said.

The New York Daily News reported that the driver was a 27-year-old Bayside resident, which could not be confirmed.

The Oct. 6 arrest marked the second time in three months a Mister Softee driver was brought up on drug charges. In August, 26-year-old Jermaine Jordan of St. Albans was arrested for allegedly dealing marijuana and cocaine out of his truck outside of Intermediate School 8 in Queens Village.

That case is pending, according to the Queens DA.
