Twisted Growth

I think I saw something about this a week or so ago, but I can't find the thread ... and now that it's happening to me (!) I really need an answer!

I have several cakes on the go right now but two of them are exhibiting bizarre mushrooms that have grown out from the side of the cake, then bent themselves back and buried their heads back in the cake! Which is all v. mystical and odd ie. snake eating it's own tail and such but it can't be good for the fungus! Can it?

Is this some funky kind of abort or what? Should I pick them before things get weirder? All the other shrooms are doing fine...

Its basically just a mutation. I'm sure its okay to eat... as long as you know its not contaminated in any way.(green mold, etc).
