Help me to choose a monitor for gaming...
    #7533209 - 10/18/07 09:30 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I want to buy a new monitor to update my old monitor for gaming. But now I have a little trouble deciding... I want to decide between this Samsung and the Dell Monitor. I don't know which one is better for gaming.

Dell E228WFP 22 inch LCD Monitor ($269).
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=320-5205&cs=19&c=us&l=en

Samsung 226BW 22-Inch, I found a pretty price for it at a deal site: $265
http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=63182

The price is not a problem for me now. But I cann't decide which one to buy. Can you help me? Or recommend other monitor... Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the Samsung 226BW (looking at it as I type this). I've been very happy with it and have no problem reccomending it.

But I'm sure the Dell product is fine also.

This Is what i use. Im a big gamer tho.
My faovrite right now is BF2142. I cant wait for crisis.

A 42" monitor is a great advantage in gameing. I did so much better when it got bigger. Games have default resolutions so wide screen users dont get to big an advantage, but you get a more "in the game feel"

Hang it on the wall and you got a sweet looking set up. Make sure if you do get a flat panel lcd that its 1080 i and has vga, HDMI, and component inputs. Scepter is a great off brand, ive had mine for a year and no complaints yet

My experience with Dell has been mixed. I have two 2005FPs. On the one hand, I've had them develop dark blotches due to manufacturing defects, this has happened three or four times(!). On the other hand, all you have to do is get on Dell's online chat and request a replacement and they Fedex it right out to you with a prepaid shipping label to return the old one. If you're willing to stretch the truth and work the support rep a little, you could probably get a replacement for anything, even a single dead or stuck pixel. Not all flat panel manufacturers have such a generous exchange policy. Then again not all flat panel manufacturers have such a high defect rate.

Hey anyone know a LCD monitor that has multiple native resolutions?

My PC is getting kind of outdated (AMD 64 3800+, Nvidia 6800 256mb) and I just don't want to run these games at native resolution. But if I don't the game looks like crap.

So is there a LCD monitor that supports say both a high native resolution plus say 1024x768 native resolution.

Man that monitor is pretty sick I might have to grab one of those and have it double as my tv as well (is there any reason this couldn't be used as a tv?). From that link you gave it said it handles  1080p, under $1000 for a 1080p 42" tv that's a steal!

Disturbed : yes it is a huge steal, they cant keep them in the stores. I hung mine on the wall (200$ wall mount) and hung my dvd player behind it for clean-ness. It doubles perfectly as a tv, but has the same annoying glitch as the rest of HD world; it takes 10 seconds to switch between channels. This is easily solved by a cable box which i need for HD anyway (except the 3 local channels with HD= garbage) Some lazing is noticeable in computer mode when runing high end graphics, but it is almost un-noticable. I stare at it more than 20 hrs a week so my eyes have sort of decoded it. Buy one!

Im confused by you using the word handle and 1080 p in the same sentance. Basicly p is horizontal refreshing and I is horizontal and verticle. If you find a way to observe this the I version would look like a barber poll and the p would look like large verticle waves (think old school tv) My screen is 1080 I CAPeABLE. It will display a full HD image reguardless of the letter if its rated at 1080 :thumbup:

you just cant beat that deal, especially how long its lasted me with 0.1% problem free operation. Btw it uses sony remote codeing for easy interface:thumbup:

SymmetryGroup8 : Native resolution of a monitor is almost always differnt that native resolution of a screem. Thats why when you start a game your computer disconects the screen from the output for a second while it reconfigures the NEW resolution that the game is set at. You will notice on an lcd like in my case the no input screen will flash while the game is loading. This is because games dissable the native 1378-724 or whatever it is and then sets the output at 1024-728. The immage still fills the screen 100%
like i said , if you could run a game a a widescreen resolution that is bigger than someone elses you would see more then them giving people with expensive screens a huge advantage. Game co's hate that idea and only test games at the GAMES'S NATIVE RESOLUTION. You cannot usually change this with monitor settings. Game software once activated controll your screen, if you want to modify the resolution you must do so with options provided by the game software; if any. :sun:

linkHEy check this out too

A FRIEND OF mine bought this one allthogh his had a siver frame that looks really nice. For 300 $ any true nerd would op for the amazimng 10more inches. (in sony terms 2" or 4 " can cost over 1000$ more) But this smaller screen has an advantage of not giving you a headach if you cant sit more than 5 feet away. This is a must. do not try and put this 42" on your computer desk and sit there like a happy fucker, you will get a pounding headache.
I also suggest backlighting the tv by putting low output lamps pointing tward the wall behind it.

Yeah. I thought there is a native resolution for an LCD monitor, such that if you run at a lower resolution in game or whatever you get crappy imaging, because the LCD down samples to the lower resolution.

So in order to get the best image when running a game you want to run the game at the native resolution of your LCD monitor. So, say my LCD runs at 1280x1200, in order to get the best possible image I have to run my game at 1280x1200.

But since my computer is kind of outdated, if I tried to run the latest games at 1280x1200 I get slow downs. If I want to run at a faster frame rate I would run my game at say 1027x768, but since that resolution is not my LCD's native resolution, the LCD down samples to 1027x768, thus I get crappy image.

But for my CRT monitor this is not a problem, since there no concept of native resolution for CRT's.

So my question is there a LCD that supports multiple native resolutions, so I can run a game at a 1027x768 without crappy down sampling.

lets talk in mesurable terms.  Frames per second is an out put measurement for your computer / video card. Download an application such as FRAPS and judge accruatly your Frames per second. this will have nothing to do with a monitor built after 2001. Compair multiple screens. your will understand.

im tripping :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

A better answer would be, buy a cheap CRT and use that until you can afford a better PC. I know how you feel, it sucks having a nice big screen and not be able to properly play games because of it.

I have a Samsung 172x, it's a few years old and the model is probably discontinued by now. But I love it, I've had no problems, and I feel good about Samsung as a brand for LCD monitors.

Just thought I'd mention this in here....I wanted to replace our TV.  We had a 51" Sony projection for the last 5 years.  It was top-o-the-line when we bought it.  But I needed room in this cramped place and going to a flat panel sounded good.  Besides, I wanted to take advantage of some HD capabilities that the old Sony could never reproduce.  So this weekend I replaced it with a new 46" Samsung flat panel.  The LN-T4665F.

There were a couple other models I might have gone for above this one if money was not an issue (for another $800 I could've gone to this  46"LCD or  this 50" plasma) but this was about all I wanted to spend.  Still, its pretty nice!  And of course, while I was at it I couldn't resist picking up a PS3 and a few games to go with it! (and I don't want to hear the "PS3 sucks" debate...I'm a PS-for-lifer, sorry).  It turned into an expensive weekend!

Anyway, now I want to hook my computer to this monster but the wife says no way.  She knows she'll never get to watch any TV if I do that!

I looked into the specter further turns out it doesn't do 1080p, only 1080i or 720p. Its still a great deal though, I'm gonna see if they have any set up at micro center and if the picture is as good as I hear ill snag it.
