Even more outdoor questions/suggestions
    #753304 - 07/17/02 10:20 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I know everyone keeps telling me to just experiment with different techniques of growing outdoors. I will explain what I plan on doing and you cans can tell me if it doesn't work and tell me suggestions.
First off, I bought a bag of what said to be cow manure at Lowes. Will this work to grow outdoors? I can't seem to find anywhere that sells uncomposted cow manure. The shit I bought seems a little dry. If it would work, would I have to soak it in water over night?
Also, my friend and I were driving around looking for places that sold bags of straw. On the way to the one store we just happened to drive by a farm or some shit that had dropped some straw right front of their drive-way. So we got a large bag full of straw for free. Anway, my question is do I soak this in water overnight before adding to my dung substrate?
My friend had the idea of adding Perlite, Vermiculite and "moisture crystals" we bought, maybe for the bottom layer of the substrate. This would be to help retain as much moisture as possible. Would that work at all?

My biggest concern is if the cow manure I have will work and if I will have to pre-treat it before using it. The bag I have is called GardenScape Cow Manure. I noticed that it says "Clohrine, Maximum - 1.0%" it said a few other things like that. Like Nitrogen content or some shit.
Is this bad?

Thanks in advance, you've been a great help.
I will be ready to start once I get the right manure.

well i dreamed that i bought a bag of manure from walmart. when i got home i learned that its only 49 percent manure or someting. the rest was organic humulas??i think thats what it said. It also containted nitrogen, phosphourus and phosphate. well i decided to go ahead with it anyway. So i dug a hole threw a layer of perlite at the bottom then put two crumbled up cakes in. Then i put the manure mixed with a small amount of perlite on top of the cakes. i had no straw so i just sprinked some dirt on top with a few small branches with leaves for humidity. I dont have the answears to your questions because i only thought about this. but i will post the results of my dream ...

Well, it sounds like my pet rock did everything you said not to...
Here's what the pet rock did, he bought a bag of this cow manure shit from Lowes, which wasn't really all cow poop. He wet down hay(let it soak for only a few hours), mixed it with the cow manure, moisture crystals and some perlite. He then picked out a spot and dug up some of the grass(this is late at night, had to be as quiet as possible). He then spread the dung mixture on the bare ground and left.
Today they went to some farm and got some manure. He believes its a mix of a few animals - cow, horse, donkey(haha). They tried to pick up as much fresh as possible but got a few dry pieces. Went home, put it in a bucket and wet it down. They mixed a little vermiculite with it. They went it down and mixed it all together. It's sitting in a bucket until ready to innoculate the 'dung patch'. They have never heard of anyone doing this so my pet rock has been careful to log what we do, how we do it, etc. just in case this actually does work.

My dog will be using mycelium. Possibly some spores too.
If you read this tek you will see that the author uses just spores. He will be using the mycelium grown in liquid(honey water). I'm sure this is just as good, if not better, than using spores. It should colonize quicker than just spores. Yes, it's probably a shitload better to use cakes or casing but he don't have the time to wait for a few jars to colonize. My dog still lives with his parents, they are on vacation for another week so everything has to be done by then. My dog was going to grow at his buddys apartment but last minute told him that he cant grow there, so had to grow outdoors. He doesn't mind, there aren't many people who have grown A LOT outdoors, it seems, so its kind of like experimenting. The worst thing that can happen is it wont work. Like I said, my dog will be posting a log of exactly what he did whether it works or not, so people know what to do or what NOT to do.

ill do that. the end result was using a jar of mycelium grown liquid-style. the 'patch' isn't that large, so it shouldnt take that long to colonize, as long as it gets enough water, shade, etc.
