Financial startup question

Hi, I just moved back home with my dad and have internet again. My dad is going on a series of 5 vacations and work related trips. Basically I have the house to myself for the next 3 months. I have done a bit of research on mushrooms before and tried growing once. The first time I grew them my jars got contaminated before colonization. I bought a kit off e-bay (I was young, and stupid). Spent over $100 bucks too on it. My question is how much money will I need to start from scratch excluding money for spores, I have those. Just to build a terrarium and acquire the rest of the materials. I would like to try and grow about 1-2 ounces before my dad gets back so I don't have to worry about growing more for a long time.

tough to answer.. generally, the less you put into it, the less you will get out of it. i've seen ppl spend under $100, and have OK results.. but this isn't exactly a cheap hobby, nor does everyone get it right on the first try..
it might be worth your while to just source out some finished product, in my opinion of course.

That is a good idea soul, however, I would like to learn the process it seems interesting. Purchasing 1-2 ounces in my area would cost much more than growing. I do not like talking about drugs with other people especially in person. I would rather it be more of a covert thing where I have control over it.

I do not beleive in growing illegal mushrooms in a parents house, especially while they are away unless you live in a country where cultivation is allowed, in the eye's of the law. In the united states the police can seize your parents house for something "you" are doing without their knowlege and I doubt you want that to happen.
Unless your parents give you permission and know what can happen then dont cultivate Just my two cents for you see'ing is i doubt your over 18 but thats just me being a idiot, anywho.
Tier greenhouse $40
Coolmist humidifer $65
Humidity gauge $20
Space heater $75
Timer $15
Preasure cooker $100
The preasure cooker is most importent $100 will get you a 22qt mirror stove top model or you can go with a more expensive model like a AA
Estimated cost is in the $275 range and thats including your jars/grains/silicone ect ect ect
Ive spent a good $600-700 on this hobby in my time and im just a crappy home cultivator.
Its gotta be the love for it

The investment:return ratio is great though, because you only need to buy the shit once. And with even one grow, it pays off usually.

If you do PF jars you can have 12 1/2 pint cakes and a shotgun fruiting chamber for less than $75 if you already have the spores and a few other household items. After a few flushes you'll have plenty for personal use. Considering that you only have 3 months I assume that's what you're looking for.

Yeah, I don't sell. I just meant that you get a lot more mushrooms for a lot cheaper than buying them.

coolmist humidifier $4 at goodwill humidity gauge: unnecessary for a barebones setup space heater: unnecessary. Keep your house about 72, and you'll be fine timer: unnecessary if you just leave the coolmist on for FAE all the time. Pressure cooker: unnecessary. Use the PF method with more jars. If you have a set timeframe I'd not recommend fucking around with bulk substrates; they're considerably more complex. The tier greenhouse/humidifier could simply be replaced with an aquarium and perlite ($15 combined).
Only you forgot spores ($20), and jars ($20 for quite a few), and substrate (BRF/verm, probably, at $20). I'd say soul's estimate is far more accurate.
And he's also right; my parents chewed me out some 10 years ago for growing weed on their property. If you get caught (and you're in high school, trust me...you're likely to), and invaded by some backwater police force, your parents will be forced to pay legal fees and indeed risk forfeiture of their house. To say nothing of what it would do to their circle of friends who would assume they condoned your activity. Wait a while; it's worth it.

You could go with a cheaper pressure cooker, even one that holds only a few quart jars is sufficient for just personal use.
And WBS is like a dollar a bag or something ridiculous---once you get a few big things out of the way it isn't a big cost.

honestly if you had to you could prob get away without even having a humidifier, if you use geolite/perlite and mist it with just a spray bottle but not directly on them. that and you would need to manually fan. the heater on the other hand i feel is more of a necessity as you want it to colonize as quickly as possible.

With the knowledge i have gained through my experience I think i would be able to do it from beginning to fruit in hand for dirt cheap. But i have spent over 1,000 in this hobby in less than a year and I don't regret any of it. This really is a neat hobby and i wish i could make it my life now. But i think with anything you get what you put into it. I put less than 100$ into my first grow and got, well, pretty shitty results by today's standards. Just be sure to dunk and roll your cakes. Mushrooms are 90% water (don't quote me on that) so the cakes will need as much as they can get.

Even though it won't save you much you can also get straight long grain brown rice at any grocery store and grind it up in a blender to make your own flour. Thats like less than a doller for one bag and thats pretty damn close to what it would be if you payed 8 and got premade flour. If you want 1-2 ounces in three months though you will need alot of cakes unless you do casings. But either way it really just depends on wether you want some for just yourself or for alittle more. My opinion though and I'm in no way saying you should not try it or that you won't have good results but on average you usually end up failing a few times before you understand why completly. I still say go for it just don't go in it with ultra high expectations. Better to be surprised because it worked than surprised if it doesn't.

Thank you for the responses. I want to assure you all that all security measures will be taken; the mushrooms are for personal use, I intend on sharing them with one person who will have no knowledge of the grow. I am over 18 pro_x I just moved back from an apartment for a few months before I move to the other side of the country.
