I grow portabella, and I love cooking and eating them. Shiitake are good too. But if you really want to impress your friends try and grow some Maitakes, they don't taste as good as ports or shit but the medicinal benefits are phenomenal!

yeah when I was living at home I set up a pretty decent stealth op for about 110 with spores... Just use the pear lite and BRF cakes and you'll be fine, I think I ended up with a little over 2 Oz's but it was hard to keep track of because each week a new flush popped up and me and my friend dosed 'em haha I think we only dried out a 1/2 ounce total but we tripped every weekend for the whole summer!!!

I think I spent somewhere around $100 for my first grow, give or take $20, not sure since it wasn't done all at once. Some of that was reusable for fufture attempts. I'd say go bare-bones, simple PF Tek until you get some results. It shouldn't cost you more tahn $100 do a dozen (maybe 2 dozen) PF half pints, start to finish.

If that works out okay for you, and you get a feel for the process and want to step it up, get a PC and move on to WBS or rye quarts the next time. But you can get VERY nice results from perlite humidification and hand misting (no humidifier) and PF-style BRF jars (no PC needed). Incubation can be at room temp, or perhaps above a radiator or atop a refrigerator for a few extra degrees, and you can be creative when constructing or salgaving a fruiting chamber or terrarium.

Bottom line: pick a simple, highly-rated tek for your first grow, get to know it before you begin, and follow the steps exactly.

No sense in buying a pressure cooker if this is a temporary thing.

I'd do up 10 PF jars and spawn them to two monotubs of coir. YOU can grow a whole lot quickly

BRF and verm: more than enough for $10
1/2 pint Jars: $4
Coir: two bricks for $10
Tubs: two for $15
Polyfill: $3
Foil: $2
Micropore tape: $2

That's less than 50 dollars, no PC, no perlite, no terrarium.

You've already got the spores, you can probably find a large boiling pot somewhere.

Instead of starting a new thread ill just post my other question in here. Has anyone used a 'Crockpot' to sterilize the jars? I have a Crockpot and would rather use that than going out and purchasing a pressure cooker. The settings are low med high so I figure if usable put it on high for about an hour? Any information would be helpful.

1 pressure cooker, 100 bux
2 cases of pint jars 20 bux
10lbs of rye grains 7 bux
u already have spores.
40 filter patch bags, 20 bux
50lbs of pre past ordered manure @120 bux

return: you'll never need cultivate again.

so about 260bux.

Just steam sterilize the pf jars in a normal saucepan.

The reason we use pressure cookers is not that it is a fancy way to cook the substrates but because the high pressure inside the cooker allows for higher than 100ºC temperatures which allow us to sterilize the substrate.

So while you can use both a pressure cooker and a crockpot to make a stew you CAN'T use a crockpot to sterilize jars, as the crockpot will never go over 80-90ºC.

Just read any of the pf tek cultivation guides on the main site and they all explain how to boil the jars for 90 minutes to achieve sterilization.

This only works consistently with pf-tek jars, as bigger amounts need the high temperatures of a pressure cooker to be completely sterilized.

I repeat once again DON'T USE THE CROCKPOT, or you will loose most or all jars to contaminations.

I think my [proposed] setup will be considered kinda ghetto by some...but here goes:

$35 - Spore Print + postage
$12 - 1ft x 1ft x 1ft plastic container [2 gallons]
$02 - Brown Rice
$02 - Coir brick
$02 - Syringe

$53 - Total.

I'll probably just go with a monotub design: crumble the BRF cakes, and spawn straight to coir. Set and forget design, no wuckin' forries!
