Success in SE Texas, Season is still going!!
    #7531169 - 10/18/07 01:01 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Well I went hunting today, thinking that I might still find some treasures, and I did. We had alot of rain, and it has been hot & humid and well success. I found both Copes & Cubies. Here are some of the pictures that I took today. I had more, but this was all I could upload today. Thanks for looking, and enjoy. I know I am!

Coplandia cyanescens tend to run about 1.5x the potency of P. cubensis. what inclines you to think the mushrooms you saw where Copes?

what i'm asking is what specific features lead you to think these are the same species. mushroom identification is all about these details, and not in the least about general comparrisons between photos.

if the mushrooms you saw look generaly like that, occurr on dung in pastures [habitat] in a semitropical area such as the gulf coase [range], have jet black spore prints [spore color] and bruise deep blue when handled, that, in the case of this species, is how you will determine that they are Copelandia cyanescens. the specifics are what matter, not the vagueries. i'm telling you this because this is safe mushroom hunting practice likely to be of use to you.

Cope are extremely potent but they have to be dealt with very delicately. Dry, they lose a lot of their potency. Fresh is best. They also have better visuals. When your picking them, they must bruise blue, especially the stems.

You better study them carefully!!!!!!! There are many other mushrooms that may look similar to some people. Before you pick any copes, KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING AT! It could mean the difference between a wonderful experience and DEATH!

nice finds! i'd love to travel to some warmer areas; if for no other reason, just to hunt mushrooms bigger than libbies. it's a strain on the eyes.

Im hoping we see a little bit more rain soon before it gets too cold. Then again i have successfully been able to find them in the cold when it rains. Im so glad my field is right down the street from my house once im in there nobody can see my and my car is parked at a in a neighborhood.

Last year, I picked lots of shrooms all the way til 12/22/06. That was the first time I picked late in the season. I even picked cubes 50 miles north of Beaumont and the ground had frozen 6 times and in one field, I saw hundreds of cubes, maybe thousands, but in 5 minutes I picked about 2lbs and if it had been more safe, I would have had many lbs of cubes. Also in the winter, cubes are significantly stronger, but copes are a bit weaker than in the summer months. So if we continue to get rain this fall to early winter, then the potential for more picking is there.

I am familiar with hunting cubes. I am hunting from Hempstead south. I pretty much only hunt cubes. I read everything I could find at the time about them and looked at every picture I could find for about 2 years before I found my first one in '95. Now that I know about copes I'm going to do the same with them. I will not eat one until I am 100% sure I know what I have. I don't know even close to everything there is to know about identifying shrooms but I do know some basic things like don't eat anything your not 100% sure of, if it doesn't blue it most likely is not active and there are some shrooms that blue that may hurt you. Not every bluing shroom is active.
I appreciate the concern. I do understand that there are, and we have had 4 or 5 people in the last 2 months say they ate without knowing what they were eating, STUPID people on this forum.
