Marijuana and rhizobium
    #7530542 - 10/18/07 09:15 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Does anybody know whether rhizobium bacteria are capable of forming root nodules on marijuana plants? For those of you who aren't aware, rhizobium bacteria form these nodules on the roots of plants and are capable of fixing nitrogen. This would pretty much eliminate the need for nitrogen fertlization, a significant advantage for the guerilla grower.

You should try using a pea innoculant and see if it makes any difference.

I don't think so, rhizobia live in a symbiotic relationship with legumes. Most nitrogen fixing plants are leguminous, there are a few other nitrogen fixing plants but I don't think there are any in the Cannabaceae family. You can just plant White Clover(Trifolium repens) at the bottom of it.

Thallus, what's the idea behind planting white clover with the marijuana? I'm assuming that the white clover is capable of fixing nitrogen gas, but how will that help the weed plant when the ammonia isn't available to it? Thanks.

A common way of giving depleted fields back some of their nitrogen is to grow clover species one season and then cutting it down and leaving it. The roots which are packed smack full of ammonia is left and will release the organically available nitrogen in the soil until next season.
One could perhaps grow some clover with the pot, cut down half of it and wait until it has covered the surface again and keep repeating that.

Heya,

Just tell me if you think this is thread hijacking, but I think it is related.. my question being: Do you think or know if there is mycorrhiza that can form symbiosis with Cannabis sp.? It could be of use in up take of nutrients and thus improve growth and also help it resist possible diseases

edit: yes,
I misread the post and thought you where talking about rhizobium.

I have seen mycorrhiza products being sold at hydroponic stores, and I think one time an employee raved about it for soil applications.

Mycorrhiza is symbiotic relationships between fungi and plant roots which helps the plant with assimilation of nutrients from the surrounding, mainly in ripping mineral nutrients that aren't available for the plant and increasing it's assimilating area. Cannabis can benefit from mycorrhiza

Rhizobium is a soil bacteria that can form symbiotic relationships with certain plants and help through fixating nitrogen. Cannabis can not gain anything from a direct symbiosis with rhizobium(as this symbiosis cannot happen)

According to the wikipedia article on alder trees, alder establishes a symbiotic relationship with some nitrogen-fixing bacteria and thus makes the soil around there very rich. I just stumbled upon that information yesterday but it seems like growing near an alder would help you on your search for nitrogen-fixing organisms.
