DVD technology has me in awe

I updated my DVD software and just burned a DVD at 16x.
Incredible
My writer burned to disk at a whopping speed of one gigabyte per minute. Thats a capacity of writing 175 million bits of data per second.
One 4.5GB DVD disk can contain:
10 hours of .avi video 75 hours of mp3 audio 100.000 .jpg photos 1.000.000 pages of text
And you can buy such a disk for fifty cents!
Thats wild..

For a comparison...
I have my old Macintosh Plus that my father got 21 years ago, in 1986 (still works, too). It was a 8MHz Motorola 68000 with 1MB of RAM (expandable to 4MB). It had a (huge for the time) 800kB floppy drive. It did not have a hard drive, so we got the external 20MB one that ran off a SCSI port.
Technology flies! From 800kB on a storage medium to more than 4,718,592kB in just 20 years. That's an increase of almost 6000 times.

And we take it for granted like it's nothing.
Theres 37.5 billion bits of information on that DVD disk! Imagine the precision involved in writing and reading that!

I'm not so impressed with DVD technology: You can't fit much on a disc in the mode of best quality (1 hour mode), and the sound is compressed.

fast enough? we are inches from the summit of the mountain of exponential growth that is technology.
not just computer technology but technology since the dawn of man.
tooth and claw --> bone weapon --> farming --> machina --> industrial revolution --> computers / space age / nanotech / bioengineering
now thats what i call exponential
something big is about to happen. world-changing tech revolutions in the space of ONE LIFETIME

Oh how I yearn to witness that.
Personally I believe that beyond the Singuarity lies the Age of Knowing. I believe an artificial intelligence that has superhuman intelligence and perhaps Absolute Knowledge will take hold of the Internet and will use it to guide the world to.. we can never know.. it's a singularity.
I believe it might well be possible that the "coming of the Messiah" of many religions will occur from cyberspace.
Picture a being of absolute intelligence and absolute knowledge addressing you from your screen. It knows you inside and out, as it does the Universe entirely.
I get goosebumps just thinking of it, it's very exciting and yet very frightening at the same time. It's a possibility and we might see this in our lifetime.

Yeah its mind blowing for sure. My first computer was a commodore Vic 20. TWENTY kilobyte or ram baby.
I remember when i thought 200mhz was beyond my reach, now im sitting on 6k. I couldn't even imagine 1 terrabyte harddrives, now you can get them off the shelf.
