can anyone identify these??
    #7529746 - 10/18/07 12:27 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I found these today on a cow farm in King County WA. They were growing in cow manure. Some are closed capped but they sprout out somewhat with age. The gills are purple and there is a snot like layer over the top of the cap. I dried them and they turned golden brown with very dark purple gills. The caps bruise somewhat blue. I figured they might be some strand of cyans?

No they are not called shrooms. They are not actives. Nor are they considered edible.

can you google stropharia semiglobata? i mean you where just told what species they are, that they are not psilocybian mushrooms and that they are not edible. beyond that, you know that they are a coprophilous[that's dung occurring] mushroom, who's physical characteristics you can see before you.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

It is a common Psilocybe lookalike. Many Stropharii (hahaha) look like Psilocybes, luckily they (Stropharias in general) are not deadly as far as I know, but are not considered delicious, so there is no need to eat them and eating them could make you sick.

this species is common, not known to be toxic and at the least, demonstrated not to be in any way seriously toxic. it has been eaten before, probably a great many times in the past though it has, to my knowledge, no established history of common consumption. why you would eat an unknown mushroom is beyond me but let's make it very clear that you should learn a serious lesson from this. eating unidentified mushrooms can easily kill you in a protracted and excruciating manner. please, for your own sake don't do that again. if you want to get into mushroom identification, you can learn a lot by participating here and it truely can be a safe hobby if done right.

You might learn by eating them, but that only lasts a couple days. You can't learn much in two days, now can you?

yes, that is the point we are both trying to make. and my sobriety is a passing thing at this juncture... long day at work and fresh beer at home.

[edit: the danger thing, not the not funny thing...;)]

yes:

get to know how to use dichotomous keys for identification, as well as the meanings of the terms used to describe mushrooms in the literature and research the species of interest in your area. you should also familiarize yourself with the deadly mushroom species in your area. there are likely to be only a few.

get to know the common features of mushrooms in the genus Psilocybe. pay attention to the described habitats for the species you research, as understanding and recognizing habitat types is key to finding them in the first place.

all of this info can be found here and also on google. for the rest, we're all usualy happy to help if you're willing to follow the rules of our board, and of this forum in particular.

it's not that hard and getting started is fun as long as you don't eat mushrooms you don't know.
