Re-starting Stalled Cakes...

Ok, so I have a dozen BRF/verm jars that were inoculated exactly 4 weeks ago. They are anywhere between 20 & 80% colonized (depending on the jar) but for some reason they have stalled and the mycelial growth has stopped. I figure this may be due to some dry heat I was using to incubate the jars, or perhaps not enough water in the original mixture. What I am wondering is: would it be advisable to use a syringe of distilled water to put some more moisture in the cakes and hopefully get them colonized completely? Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about a syringe or distilled water. Never tried it.
But when my jars stalled I took the tinfoil off the top, knocked the jars around a bit till the cakes loosened up from the sides of the jars then flipped them upside down. Left them like that and they started colonizing again right away.
hope that helps.

Huh. And there was no problem with contamination getting in through the holes in the lids? Or did you reseal with tin foil after the shake down?

No the dry layer of vermiculite will keep out any contaminates.
They also colonize faster with the holes not covered. I believe Magash made a post about that some time ago. He did two sets of jars. Some with tinfoil and the others without. The jars without colonized at twice the speed.
Also I didnt really shake them to much. Just knock the bottom and tops of the jars slightly till the cake loosens up.
