after dried i keep them in sealed plastic bags and then covered by a paper bag to prevent contact wit light. very important to be sure they are 101% dry before placing in plastic bags so they dont mold or rot.
what is a good dissecant?

table salt can be baked and used too.
dont u know how we humans made salted meats? we would fire roast salt so it would expel moisture, and then bury chunks of meat deep into it. preserving it.
epsom salt is 1-2$ for a milk carton of salts, less expensive than table salt, and usually easier to find.
in an airtight enclosure, the salt sucks the remaining moisture from the mushrooms, to try and rehydrate itself.
if your mushrooms arent cracker dry, and they still flex or bend, they will mold in a jar or bag. its happened to me once with a few different kinds of mushrooms, mainly agaricus augustus. digging into your pantry for some caps for your upcoming soup and finding a jar full of moldy lumps, is kinda irritating.
now i use baked epsom flakes, wrapped up in a paper towel and taped shut, throw into the jar or bag with them to keep them CRACKER DRY. most dessicants are poisonous anyways, with epsom or table salt u can easily stick the mushrooms directly into the salts and not worry about accidentally consuming some. the worst u will get from eating TOO MUCH epsom salts is diarrhea, otherwise its completely harmless.

I took an old food dehydrator and just cut the heating element inside. throw a few trays with mushies in there and let it sit for about 6 hours.
viola! nice and crispy.

thats a good option too. im afraid to do that because i use the dehydrator for fruit as well and then it wouldnt work so well. is it easy to remove and replace the heating device in a dehydrator?

If you have a dehydrator use it. If you don't, you don't really have to bother with salts, or anything like that. If you have whole room to dry them, just spread them on some newspapers and let them dry "ye old way". Takes it's time, but you don't need any electricity or other anything...

food dehydrator is great! don't use one myself... but you cant go wrong with that. I put mine on a screen, a couple of feet above a radiator heater... warm, dry air - THEN... grind those babies up in a coffee grinder, put them in half-gram gel-caps -- and into the freezer they go. I get 5 years or more out them that way, and they're easier to transport.

air drying, even with a fan can only go so far in many areas. as an example; the air on the olympic peninsula in autum/winter is wet - like hard to keep a cigarette burning wet at times. it is not possible to dry mushrooms in such air and dehumidification or desiccant's become nessecary.

Within a three foot range from the back of the computer. A computer will keep room temp higher, with a detriment depending on size of said room.
Added benefit is a slow warm airflow about a foot over the mushrooms (Only in an ATX Mid or Full Tower, in upright postition).
The elevated air flow will keep more spores on the paper, by creating a softer lift of air, rather than a direct flow.
