PNW Cyans

Umm...I picked some cyans yesterday and some of them had a very strange black and wet almost mold looking type stuff on them. It looked to be very slimy but when I touched it it didn't rub off or anything. Is this common among cyans...it looks just like black shit and when I hold it up to a light I can see purple tints. I just would like to know if I can eat them after I dry them?

When they get old, they turn black and start to decompose (slimey). If I were you, I wouldn't eat them anymore...

Assuming you know what they are and are positive of the id, smell means alot. Do they smell ok? If they are rotting, they won't dry for a much longer period. I'd prolly make a tea anyway

LousieLousie: What about possible toxic molds that are present in the decomposing matter? What if those toxins are water soluble?

My cyans get the same thing, I usually just cut the spots out unless they are really bad.

I've never heard anything like that. I guess it's possible. Slime or rot definitely isn't good for you.

they are black spots. I think they are from bacteria or possibly a sun burn. Not sure. Either way it is wise to cut it out before drying.

That's what I would do. I would think you will know if the whole mushroom is bad. But keep in mind the rule: When in doubt, chuck it.

the particular black splotches i am familiar with which cyans [and some other mushrooms] often get as they decompose are a bacterium which has been attributed by many to stomach cramping, discomfort and loose bowel type experiences.
as a paraphrase of what somebody here once said 'would you eat a cucumber in that condition?' if not, why would you want that kind of thing in your stomach as you where comming into the grip of the little ones?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

well I think the conclusion is NOT to eat the black spots....however the ones I speak of are smelling quite fine...it isn't like they are rotting horribly...they are slimy and black. I think I am going to dry it all out and eat it. I don't have a problem with a little stomach cramp. Does anybody think this is terribly unwise?

Well, if they are slimy and black they might not even be cyans. Is there any ways for you to prove to yourself they are not slimey black Galerina?

I'd personally pass up all the trouble and worry of preparing the crappy slimey ones, and just use that time to find new patches. Cyans are everywhere. Also, I went to a local park, recently, and found a couple patches which weren't there a week ago. So don't give up on a likely spot, there may be fruits where there weren't any at previous visits.
