BROWN???
    #752738 - 07/17/02 08:38 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I know to check the FAQ first which I have done, but that part of the site is under construction. I have 12 cakes of brown rice and verm. 4 of them or 90% covered in mycellium, all that is left to be covered is the bottom. I have noticed that a faint brown is showing threw some of the newer mycellium growth, could this just be the verm? or is it EEEK a dreaded contam. The cakes are beginning to pull away from the sides of the jars, and Im contemplateing if it would be better to birth them now. PLS HELP

prolly just a little water damage,
i'd urge being patient and letting them finish colonization before birthing.

Hi. My turtle is doing the same as you and is on his third batch. He tells me he's had patches of a light brown colouring to some of his cakes while in the jars, often in an area where there was perhaps a little extra moisture in the verm/brf mix ... and apparently it's harmless since all the cakes have birthed nicely and grown well with no contams! So yeah, wait till it's done colonizing and then wait a couple of days more just to be sure and birth em!

Thanx Guys

As a paranoid newbie who is trying her best to be patient the info comes as a GIANT relief. I didn't think it was contams because the smell of my jars is still pleasantly mushroom like. I'll wait as long as I can and then birth my cakes, Im gettin a digital cam so Im gunna try to start a post in the grow log forum look for it in about a week or two.

Love
Snowbunny
