Opuntias can be difficult and slow to germinate. They will germinate intermittently over a long period. They may respond to cold stratification, chipping, soaking, or periodic drying and flooding. I find that they germinate well by the paper towel method. They can take from 1 to 3 months to germinate.

should get some germination using normal methods... all be it at a slower pace...
a zero germination rate would point towards it being old seed that is no longer viable i guess...

yeah.. almost reminds me EXACTLY like something someone that goes by the name shrubs_n_bulbs would post around Wed, Aug 23, 06 at 5:12 in a thread called "opuntia seed pod" if such existed ;-] ;-]

thanks for the help guys.
the seeds are picked fresh this season from mature pods. i dont know the species.

this opuntia grows wild all over my area. I believe it may actually be two or three very similar species. one with grey thorns, one with orangy red thorns, and one with short dark thorns with thick tufts of itty bitty spines. some grow greener some grow wider. they are all very similar though.
i have several hundred seeds and will be collecting many more pods as they mature. i've also been collecting fresh pads for grafting.
I'll try knicking a few seeds and give them time. Thanks again guys.

ive got some sitting in the cactus germ pot waiting to pop, they have been in there for a month now and theres not much movement. they are viable too. i wonder if soaking them for a few days would help.

the cold trick mentioned might be a good idea....many opuntia come from places with very cold winters.
