can I substitute honey for malt/dextrose/potato in agar petri dishes to grow out myc? I was thinking at 5%.
The usual ingredients are either unavailable or a pain to prepare.
Thanks

I'm not sure how this applies to growing myc... but honey is an anti bacterial agent. If you notice... honey never goes rancid or supports any growth. They have honey that is still good that was burried with egyptian pharos. Of course it will crystalize over time. So... without knowing shit I'm gonna say no.

it supports growth ok in an LC because it's been diluted down to 4%, the same percentage I'd be using in agar.
My other idea was to soak a cardboard disc in honey water and use it like an agar plate.

OK, I can see that happening with a lower percentage of honey like that.

Actually, unpasteurized honey can contain Clostridium botulinum, which is harmless to most people but can be dangerous to infants. I don't know if can contain anything that is harmful to mushie myc, but I wouldn't assume honey to be sterile. It does has some anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties, or so I've read, but I'm not sure to what extent these are useful to us.

Mepher, obviously I'd stertilize the honey mixed with the agar before trying to grow myc on it. All I'm asking is, will honey work as a food source additive for myc in agar in the same way it works well in LC?
