Pan. Subb. Look a Likes

I've been hunting for Pan's for the past two weeks, I've spore printed every mushroom I've found, and tossed all the ones without spore prints. The ones with Jet Black spore prints I've kept, and they match the description fine. I'm wondering, that, if there were to be a look a like in there, how badly would it harm me, if at all? What Pan. Subb. look a likes have jet black spore prints? Some of them may possibly have been brown or very dark brown prints, could these do a lot of damage? Thanks a lot, in advance.

I'm new, but I don't think there's anything harmful with similar look and print to the subbs. Foes are harmless. And on my trip this weekend, I intend to make omlettes with all the foes I find.

no black spored mushrooms from lawns that have zonates (panaeolus) are toxic.

PyroBurns, not a good idea. Not a good practice to do that.
I have heard of people eating lots of Panaeolina (testing to see if they are psychoactive) spending a lot of time on the toilet afterwards. Can anyone back me up on this? I am just going from memory.

> no black spored mushrooms from lawns that have zonates (panaeolus) are toxic.
No black spored mushrooms are known to be toxic except for Coprinopsis atramentaria.
The darkest spored toxic mushroom is Hypholoma fasiculare which has a purplish brown print.
> PyroBurns, not a good idea. Not a good practice to do that.
I don't see anything too wrong with it. Sure its a little risky, but so is everything else.
If there were poisonous members of Panaeolus it would be a very different story.
> I have heard of people eating lots of Panaeolina (testing to see if they are psychoactive) spending a lot of time on the toilet afterwards. Can anyone back me up on this? I am just going from memory.
I have heard people say that too, but the person who tried it is probably long gone. edit: I guess not.
I bet they ate them raw, and who knows what else was on 300 raw mushrooms. The indigestible chitin could easily have that effect. They might be fine cooked.
They do taste kind of funny, kind of a tryptamine zoo-like taste, probably from the tryptophan and 5-htp and precursors.
Maybe I am biased because I want to find out what happens.

Ehh, maybe I shouldn't then. I was just really hungry when I decided on that and anything was sounding tasty.
Actually, I was even craving the putrid Earthy taste people describe some shrooms as having.

Another question, in that case. I really don't want to get sick, and definitely don't want to die, lol. BUT, most of the shrooms I've sorted out are pretty much dry... Can these still be identified? Or at least differentiated from the active/non - active ones? Thanks a lot once again!

i guess it depends on the level of dryness you should still get a black SP long after they have matured, but i've found that it gets a bit sketchy, and i end up just throwing em away because you get a jet / brown kinda mix. gills falling below their margains and a 'twisted, roped lines' on the stem' would indicate a foe. zonates will disappear after drying. but yes, it is generally undesirable to produce a dried specimen for ID.

Twisted stems and roped lines are attribute of subbalteatus. arent they? im just assuming...
 From this picture...
these "twisting" lines are more attributed to subbalteatus that they are to foes. in my experience.

Yes, in my experience twisting lines up the stem are characteristic of subbalteatus.
Although some subbs have relatively straight lines running up the stem. And on some it's hard to see the lines until they dry a bit.
Also the gills do tend to drop below the margin on some subbs I've collected. Actually in one patch I know of about a third of the subbs have gills that drop below the margin.

OK, well, this is my first active hunt, but these mushrooms I have smell exactly like previous actives I've bought and ingested... Is that because they're active? Or do all mushrooms generally have the same scent after drying? I'd like to eat them this weekend, but of course, want to be safe. Will post pics later, although they're getting close to "cracker" dry.

Almost all actives have a farinaceous taste and smell, but so do inactive Stropharias and many other species.
> Or do all mushrooms generally have the same scent after drying?
I think the farinaceous thing goes away after drying.

What was the spore print color?

I've already spore printed them, I describe them in my first post. 90% of them were Jet Black, but some were black, just not as black... I'll post picks tonight.
