I bought a bag of mixed whole grains at the grocery. It's calledBob's Red Mill Grande' Whole Grains (cereal and pilaf) it's a mix- ingredients: whole grain hard red wheat, long grain brown rice, oats, rye, tricicale(wtf?), barley, buckwheat, sesame seeds. I did a PC cook and it came out shakeable. Anybody? Any opinions? Could this make a successful substrate? I don't have alot of spores to mess around with.

no its not necessary but i would try to remove as many of the oats as i could unless there are not very many to begin with. the only real problem with them is that they tend to turn into mush

I'd say leave it alone, load it in jars, pc, and inoculate with LC, and then leave the mix-in's like you mentioned to the casing mix. Should work fine. I would also start some WBS and popcorn at the same time with the same solution and compare times and yields.

If you don't have a lot of spores to mess around with, I wouldn't take a chance. What I would do is go with a tried and true method that you know works for you, and secure a grow, (however small it may be), and devote that grow to make spore prints. You invest a month of time and get many many prints to experiment until your hearts content.

Good suggestion, Thnx, being a newbie I'm conservatively anxious for a huge yield. Simply because of having little to start with.

LC is what I'm worried about. I'm very particular about sterility( I'm in the medical field)but I've never done a LC before.

Have you tried any of the products? and what do you think of the grain mix? I PC'd it and got a shakeable mix. Do you think there are any grains in there that might mess it up?

Buddha, I checked out your link. Bob's wheat is good, so I'd like to try the rye, which I haven't seen locally. But they quoted the shipping for a 4-pack, 7.5 lb case at exactly $1000. Yes, one thousand dollars for ground shipping of seven and a half pounds. That seems a little high, to me. Or $100 (one hundred dollars) for 3 Day Select shipping. Goofy.
