Anyone cultivate chickens?

We got our first 4 this spring, and have soooo many eggs.
Anyways, we've got a nice freerange area beside and behind the house, no predators, and nice coop.
However, its getting cold out now.. and we're going to add a heat lamp into the coop. Having trouble finding the specifics on *type of bulb* and *wattage,* etc.
Any ideas?

My apartment doesn't allow chickens for some reason

All through the summer I leave my coops window and door open through the night (Window is meshed over and the door opens into a completely wire encased pen).
Early fall I start closing the door and window at night. I'm talking temperatures in the 60-40 range at night.
Once it starts hitting 45ish I like to keep the ladies warm with a heat lamp. If you used a heat lamp to raise them (from pullets) then that lamp will probably be fine, you will just want to turn it on when you lock them up at night and turn it back off in the morning when you let them out. Also, be careful depending on how large the interior of your coop is. It isn't such a good idea to have a heat lamp on for 8+ hours 6 inches above a bed of straw, the wire encasing the bulb gets hot enough to scorch wood on contact.
My suggestion is go to a feed store and check out what lamps they have, if your coop is smallish then you'll probably want the smallest (wattage) lamp they offer.

mine hang out in the back yard, the range from the pig pen to the garden, they arent penned and there's lots of predators, fox and coyote mostly but they've survived the summer. they're good foragers. they were free. if they make it through the winter, I'll think about keeping them

My chickens range around the yard and garden much like yours Prisoner, they love to eat all the garden vegetables, even the pumpkins. Sometimes we lock them in the compost... they especially love pulling worms from the ground, after it rains.
Anyways, i got a small heat lamp from the feed store today. We are going to have to extend their coop to raise the light up off their bedding.
