ive seen a vermiculite casing tek, and wondered do you get better yields from pk cakes even with just a verm casing?

you might aswell just roll the cakes
look up RR's dunk and roll tek unless you're combining alot of cakes you won't get a much better yeild
for a casing to work well you need 2 inches of substrate at the lowest with 4 or 5 being your goal
i prefer verm only because verm doesn't harbor many contams as isn't very nutritous and also don't have to worry about pH problems
pH is important unless you want a trich fest

you're only going to get so much of a yield regardless of what casing mix you're going to get, with crumbled brf cakes.
I use verm only casings for my monotubs. I have great results. I haven't had a casing layer contam in about a year either.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
and remember, a casing layer should not be nutritious whatsoever.

really? I've had one inch sub. casings work wonders the shrooms were thin but they sure were numerous
to original poster - if you want to case go buy a bag of mgmc which is a good option. pretty cheap and ready to go

shallow substrate depths produce spindly shrooms, THey are shrooms none the less, but once you've created a six inch substrate depth, and get 3/4th oz dry single mushrooms off it consistently, you'll wonder why you ever did a 1" sub depth... and.. four months later, when it's FINALLY done flushing, you'll be like "That's why jeetered uses six inch depths!" "DOH"

I get you well I will find out soon enough on second grow and currently have 6 large casings of just rye and casing layer. avg depth of sub probably around 2 going to start spawning to coir as soon as it comes in the mail contemplating just making really deep casings or going for the tub just worried that if its my first time spawning and putting all my eggs in one basket with the tub it can go horribly bad..but then again its not rocket science

Hey Mikeytro, I just started out on my first grow and I had to figure out where to find stuff like Coir. Turns out my local petsmart had it, called "Bed-a-beast" in the lizard section. It was only $5 for a brick. GL!

I lost all my wbs to contamns cuz I forgot filterdisks on the lids....anyway I used BRF cakes but I figured I would see if, since pasteurizing doesn't kill everything in the straw and it is ultimately a race.....so I decided it was time to let the games begin. I figure since more myc - faster colonizing that a 3:1 spawn:straw would be sufficient...and it was. I cased with straight verm and it is pinning now. I figured if I ground up the straw it would speed it up too so I put it in the coffee grinder for a sec and shredded it into hairlike strands a half inch long. sure enough in 2 days it was fuly colonize so on the 3rd day I cased it, 3-4 days later 13 pins

At the very least, you'll have extra left over for whenever you want to use coir again. Just don't hydrate the whole brick at one time, and you should get plenty of use out of a brick that big.

I just spawned 144 pints to 2 full bricks of coir, filled 10 x 10gallon monotubs

heh, i've had an inch deep layer produce a quite a bit recently, but it's pinning very weakly now after producing about an OZ dried and a few grams of dried aborts on it's first flush
sure it works, but there are better things you can do with cakes other than dunk'n'roll
perhaps you should use it to spawn to 4-5 grain jars?
4-5 grain jars should be a nice casing if you're not ready to spawn that to bulk
speaking of, my bulk substrate just finished pasteurizing, now it has to cool, i'm so eager to spawn to it

I pasteurize mine bro, coz it's a big hard brick, it absorbs best under hot water, so why not just pasteurize it u know, besides... i'd never just use coir straight out of the box, it's way to nutritous for that.

jeetered, did you just use straight coir and straight verm or do you have an additives in your bulk?

cupcake when i use coir as a bulk sub, i add to it, coir and verm, and some Malt extract, some calc carb, and a touch of peptone. I mix the verm in at about 40%.
When I use manure, i simply use what comes when i order it from www.mycopath.com.

40% verm? Really?
I was gonna do that but i just thought that it would hold WAY too much water. Im just now fruiting my first double tub of coir/composted manure/worm castings. Well, i'll be fruiting later today early tomorrow.
when you case with verm, you pasteurize it? how deep? and do you wet it first or spray it down after you spread it out on the sub dry?

I put the verm on the substrate straight out of the bag, no need to pasteurize/sterilize it as it's inert and inorganic... I only dust the top with about a quarter to half inch as the layer, no more then a half inch.
and yeah, DEEP sub depths give monster shrooms and LONG flushes.
