Conditioning insuficiently aged H-manure
    #7524050 - 10/16/07 04:09 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I picked up some horse manure from a rodeo fair ground the other day, There was a big pile of it sitting in a trailer. It was mostly aged but there was a bit of stuff that seemed a bit too fresh and I couldn't avoid getting some in my bag. I layed it out on garbage bags and busted up the fresher nuggets,(I figure 2 -5 weeks old but obviously I cant say that for sure) thinking I could just let them dry on my balcony for a day or two. That was before I did some intense reading on horse manure. So what im wondering is if theres any way to speed up the aging process, even if its only a half-assed solution. I'm also wondering what would happen if I had some manure that wasnt sufficiently aged and mixed it in with the rest of my bulk substrate.

From what I have read theres no way to really speed up the aging process, not even leeching it and drying it in the oven. But I also haven't read what happens if you mix in a bit of newer stuff with the older stuff, or for that matter what happens if you use only stuff thats too fresh.

I know allot of people will instinctively tell me to just toss this manure and go find the good stuff, and I know it's good advice really. But the thing is, its getting to be past gardening season, especially in my area, and it wouldn't really make sense if I tell people that I need it for growing crops, so i'm reluctant to go knocking on peoples doors. plus this stuff is already sitting in my apartment and my roommate will be chocked if I tell him this stuff is no good and now we need to go get more (I dont have a car).

Fuck. Manure needs to be aged before being used? Didn't know that.

Spread it out over a wide area so the sun can bake it for about a week or two. When there is no more smell of ammonia, it's ready to use.
