I think they might be contaminated they smell kind of minty in a way. Not like any other cakes I have ever fruited. There is 2 of them and they are both isolated.
Does anyone think I should toss them?
Thanks

They are Mazapatecs I thought for sure they were fully colonized all the other jars that I inoculated at the same time were well fully colonized. I pulled them out just verm on the outside of the cake the stuff that stuck to the jar that didn't colonize.
I washed them off, dunked them for 24 hours. I see some of the white puffy growth on one of the cakes. There is some yellow on one of them as well. I don't know if it's contaminated or just yellow from the verm that discolored the mycelium.
I should just toss them.

Don't jump to quick conclusions. Firstly, that yellow is more than likely to be the myc metabolites (myc piss). Secondly, just because the smell is slightly different than you've experienced before doesn't mean it's a contaminate. Haven't you encountered things in this hobby before that weren't exactly like you've experienced them before and it turn out perfectly fine?
In one of my experiences, I had birthed several cakes and they all had the mushroom scent to them, except for one. It still smelled like mushrooms, but a little sweet. Not extremely sweet, but just a little different than the others. Of course I freaked out thinking it was contamed and quickly posted on these boards. Nothing really satisfied my curiosity of what it could be, but since the smell was nothing too extreme and no signs of contams, I went ahead with it and they turned out fine.

Your right it's only 2 cakes. I have more innoculating so I will just toss them.
It's not a light sweet smell it's a strong sweet smell. Almost too strong to even put my face near.

If those cakes were isolated, there wouldn't be any risk. It could just be a case of overreacting so they might be 2 perfectly good cakes gone to waste. If the smell of sweetness/mintiness makes you think... wtf? then there might be a problem. If throwing them out to avoid confusion and just to get it off your hands will make you feel better, then do it. If you feel like you might be wasting something that could still be used, perhaps just experiment with it. Whichever will make you feel better, just go with it.

Ahh, I see. If it's strong enough to make you pull your head away from it when you smell it then sure, I'd toss it... I was thinking it was just a slightly minty smell. Goodluck with your endeavors

*shrug* If it's a sweet smell it's likely bacillus (bacterial rot). It's not something transferred in the air, or anything likely to infect your grow after PCing. I'd very much recommend birthing them.
My guess is a small chunk is uncolonized, and infected. The yellow you're seeing is probably metabolites that the mycelium produces to fight off the infection. Case em. There's no danger to your health, and almost certainly none to your grow area.

Bacteria is not transferred in the air?
Ever head a sinus/lung infection that wasn't viral?
Nah, that didn't come from the air.

Thanks again for all the info. I threw one away cut some stuff off the other washed out my fruiting chamber real good got rid of the smell and I will see how this one chunk left of the cake does.
If nothing it's ok I'm going to stick to casings. Slicing up the cakes is awesome for casings as opposed to crumbling. IMPO that is.

Nah, that didn't come from the air.
Usually a lung infection hitches a ride on water from one's breath. That and sucking it into your lungs tends to help out. Aerial bacteria is common, of course; just ask the last batch of beer I made.
However I've never heard of, or experienced bacillus being the result of anything but poor PCing. Mycelium can overcome small levels and aerial bacteria isn't a worry (hell, you leave thousands of bacteria in the grain by only partially sterilizing it during pressure cooking). My point was not that it's impossible, but rather you aren't producing a cloud of infective material to be worried about as you would mold spores. There's no need to "chuck it".

True that; mold spores are a B!TCH!
If a jar gets molded over...it gets PC death!
