Lion's mane questions *pic*... 2 new questions.
    #7522456 - 10/16/07 09:53 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

This is my first time growing Lion's mane (Second time growing any kind of shrooms).

I inoculated a jar of rye about 40 - 45 days ago. I am going to try and transfer it to the phone books (like RR), or newspaper. But I have been really busy, and I noticed some wired stuff growing... and it looks like it is oozing tree sap or something. is this normal?

I also did one BRF cake and left it in the incubator too long (my FC was kind of full) and the myc colonized the dry verm barrier and formed the same tings on top... but without the sap. I scooped a little out and transfered it to a wood substrate bag that was not showing any signs of colonization. .... But the cake seems to be fruiting fine.

Also when will I know the fruits are ready to be picked?

Oh and Hi all.

Well it looks like your rye is fruiting in vitro, could be because you didn't use tyvek filter/discs. But I could be wrong I don't have a lot of experience with Lions Mane, I've only grown it once.

What color is the sap? Can you maybe edit your pic and circle where it is your talking about the "weird" stuff growing. It seems to look alright to me (not contaminated) but my view is very limited by these pics.

I see an area that looks to be a heavy metabolite discharge, possibly due to bacteria contamination. If so, it means you can't use that grain for grain to grain transfer, but it should be fine spawned to sawdust/woodchips or a phone book. Invitro pinning of hericium species is quite common. My strain of lion's mane begins pinning within a day or two of full colonization on rye. It's no problem though-you can spawn the grains, invitro fruits and all, right to bulk substrate.

Cool thanks for the help.

Just to make sure I do this right .....
This weekend I will Cut out a kind of a stash area out of the phone book, and drill a bunch (15-20) 1/8 inch holes in the book. then I will put it in a pot of water and maintain the temp between 140 - 160 F
for 1 - 1.5 (or 2 ??) hours.
once it is cooled, I will transfer the grain to the cutout area (if the phone book is still intact  )
This will be in an Al baking tray thing. seal it with foil.. make about 3 holes for gas exchange..... and put it in the incubator for 1-2 months and then fruit!!!
(will do a kind of grow log :hehehe: )

Does that sound about right??
Also i want to do some with newspaper too .... probably the same way ..... or maybe try and turn it into mush and use it that way and layer it like Hpoo.

Any ways thanks for all the help

Here is a closer view of what i am talking about.... so is the sap stuff toxic?

That looks like metabolic exudate, though i've never seen it growing on pins like that before. I do not believe it is toxic. If it in fact exudate, then it is more likely to have unique medicinal properties as opposed to being toxic, it may be medicinal.

Legal Disclaimer: the above could be totally WRONG! It is my opinion;)

That should work. I haven't noticed Hericium eating through aluminum. I've noticed that shiitake mycelium will disolve many holes through an aluminum baking tray, even before first flush. I just harvested some shiitake from a phone book that was sitting in an aluminum tray, that was completely full of holes. I'm sending the fruits tomorrow morning to have them tested for aluminum or other heavy metals.

I'd recommend using a plastic tray, or lining the baking tray with plastic. Good luck.

1... How can I take a spore print, and when should i take a spore print???
I did search and all I found was http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2627803#2627803

2... When do I harvest, or what are the signs that the mushroom is ready? (the fruits on my cake look like sea coral things rather than having the finger like tentacle things)

Here are some pic of my cake

Sorry to bring up this thread again, but I don't think these questions calls for a new thread.

Thank you
Abesh

Those are just starting to come out of the primordia stage. Be sure to pour the water to them, as they'll dry out the cake pretty fast, and then they won't finish.

When it elongates into tubes, it's ready to harvest. The spores come out of the end of the tubes. You can lay wax paper under the fruits as they're on the cake to collect spores, but once you have a good fruiting strain, which you do, you don't need spores. Protect your culture and grow from that.

The hericium in the picture below is ready for picking. Don't forget to give plenty of light and fresh air. Hericium, like oysters, is CO2 intolerant.
