Wandering nomadic spiritual junk
    #7520589 - 10/15/07 06:29 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Have any of you ever experienced or thought about experiencing homelessness?

I was backpacking/hitchhiking this summer back from a festival, it took me about 3 days. I camped in people's back yards and in the forest up on a hill. It was a totally liberating experience, I have never felt that kind of freedom. And remembering it just makes me wanna experience homelessness. I may just try it next spring/summer.

Anybody have similar thoughts?

I've spent a couple summers homeless and doing the travelling around and crashing at collective houses or in the woods thing. It was really good for me one year, ok for me the next... but always shit in september when I got back to town and had to crash for a month before finding a home and a source of income. I'm not really into the pattern anymore, but it is a source of confidence to know that I know how to survive on zero money if I have to.

I think I would enjoy homelessness. I've thought it might be useful for me to get that kind of total freedom before settling down for a life of responsibility

going through winter and suffering from the intense cold (at least here in Canada) could be beneficial as well, then the blossoming of summer could be a completely new and liberating experience on it's own.

Yes you could put it that way. I haven't recieved a paycheck in over twenty years. My socialsecurity isn't paid off so I'm not eligable to be locked up by the system that feeds on that sort of thing. I bum from my friends.

it would be perfect to be homeless in a town that has a Labor Ready (Kelowna BC is where this may go down).  if you run out of food or supplies, work for a day make 70 bucks and your good for a week or two!

use library for computer/laptop/internet.  when winter comes, rent a room in a house and make just enough money to survive.

I'm definitely excited about this.

look like a nice place to live homeless? :hippie:

good fishing, eh?

Anyone been out to the Queen Charlotte islands? Is the weather less rainy out there? Is it mostly swamp?

I have spent many weeks and months alone in wilderness areas (especially high desert). I took survival classes and really got into the whole thingy. It was some of the best time I have ever spent. Amazing things happen when you are alone for more then a week at a time. Try it.

Also it naturally stimulates recapitulation of ones whole life and many memories long repressed or forgotten naturally emerge as if just waiting for the flow to reverse. We usually have so much garbage etc. flowing into our consciousness that the process almost never reverses and flows back out for review. Many gems are lost.

Warning: Kelowna is a redneck shithole! It's an ugly, sprawling wasteland full of Hell's Angels and way too much cocaine. If you really wanna go to the deserty interior region try Kamloops instead, it's a bit smaller and there's some good folks out that way.

Hell yeah. I mean the more I see homeless people the more I don't want to experience it but there's many different kinds.

I met a girl, about my age, 22, that's well without a home. So I won't call her completely homeless but she'll manage to sleep at friend's places and whatnot. Anyhow she basically works as a cook at the soup kitchen for food, if she needs any money she'll ask one of the farmers in the area if they need help with their crops and she says she's really happy. She doesn't have any schedule to abide by, hangs out at this bar/music store all the time. she's pretty cool.

anyhow, yeah totally.

Homelessness by choice it seems to me would make for a happy soul. When I was a young man I did it for a short time off and on. I lived in a pack and traveled by hitchhiking mostly in the west, up and down the coast. Every day was different and an adventure. When we get older and a little beaten down we don't challenge ourselves in these ways usually. As Hue says we draw in our lives  and get protective of our self and our "things".  It seems that most folk "grow up" and do this.

I was talking to a friend in his mid 60s last night and he said he was about to chuck in his long time life here and start over, fresh, somewhere new, where he was a stranger. I think it shows his vitality . He's the youngest 60+ I've ever seen. He still looks a little like a kid and has always been healthy as far as I know. (physically I mean);)

I'm guessing the weather would be shit most of the time, I used to live on the coast and it never stopped raining.  although it can be a beautiful place (especially the nature) it's just not worth it.  unless rain is your kind of thing.. but I grew up with it so no.

BTW, no good fishing in our lake.  unless you want a 3 eyed fish :rotfl: not sure about Kelowna though.

NiamhNyx - I'm not too worried about the people in Kelowna, meeting people isn't my goal.  I wouldn't be spending much time in town anyways, mostly the surrounding mountains and wilderness.  Use the town for food, supplies, library, clean-up etc.  nobodhi's comin

When I lived in Settle I used to head up fishing in your neck of the woods. We caught Kamloops trout. Some were really big and they were strong jumpers and fighters. We would get on connecting lakes and take acid and go from lake to lake in canoes exploring.

That depends what one calls 'home'. There are philosophical debates about it.
My doctrine would be: "The world is my oyster" (FGTH) - and I love nature.

But in reality, it is only my ideal and I see me moving away from that, sadly, as I rent some shitty flat, which I wouldn't really call 'home'. My parents divorced and I was driven out of 'parents house' as I was 18. My father supported me for a while as I was on university, but since over 12 years (since I stopped studying) I absolutely live on my own...in not 'home like' conditions for some reasons. I even moved quite often.
Again, I am caught inbetween - planning to make the best out of it
Somehow, I call myself a gypsy :sun:

I remember one of my crazy friends who was a real slacker caught a tiny trout about five inches and wouldn't take it off the hook. He jokingly said he was using it for bait and that fucker caught a six pound kamloops rainbow that was by far the biggest one we caught.

I'd doing that as soon as I get my G.E.D.  I'm going backpacking into the interior of BC, setting out from my doorstep and heading north through the mountains, maybe alone, maybe with some friends, I'll camp where I need to, and maybe linger around the fringes of big cities when I reach them, visit relatives and such. I've been planning and preparing for it for quite some time, it promises to be quite the experience. Maybe I'll run into you around Kelowna:yesnod:

In my experience i have found that the many of the homeless have decide to live that way.

Its not like they are lazy or morons or something.... They tried that way of life- and actually liked it!!

So homlessness is in many parts a sad state- but in others- some choose that way of life and live it hapilly

Well, as long as you know what you're doing in Kelowna. I was just worried that you had never been there and were from Ontario or something, thinking it was a great place from the tourist pictures. :smirk: Enjoy. You wouldn't catch me dead in that town. I like most parts of BC, just not Kelowna (or Abbotsford... basically any sprawling not-quite-a-real-city.)

I've been to kelowna before and really enjoyed the outdoors (surrounding wilderness), that is all that really matters to me. the reason i am thinking kelowna is because it has labor ready, if i need to work for a day i can. rather than try to find a job myself they will find a job for me for the day. if Nelson had a labor ready, i would be there.

I assume you're not interested in the coast... because vancouver and victoria also have labour ready, and other similar agencies. There's one on main and broadway in Vancouver, whose name escapes me since I haven't used it in so long, that is particularly good, friendly and fair.

I bet Nelson is an easy town to be homeless in though, I've never been but they've got that whole hippie thing going on there big time. I bet you'd hook up with people that had good connections and you could probably do farm work for extra cash on a casual basis. Just a guess. It might be worth looking into. You could also consider wwoofing (willing workers on organic farms.) It's slightly more stable than outright homelessness, but close enough. A good transition anyways.

I assume you're familiar with one of the most useful skills in the ultra low budget arsenal - dumpstering...?

there is no way I'm dumpstering - thats why i stress there must be a labor ready or some other way of doing temporary work. i like your idea about farm work in Nelson, will look into it. have thought about wwoofing but not too interested at this time.

Dumpstering isn't bad dude. It's not as easy and tidy as walking into a grocery store, but it's not terrible. You can find some great stuff in the dumpsters of grocery stores and bakeries. I don't do it anymore because I'm living the high life on a student loan, but I wouldn't rule it out either. If you know the right dumpsters it's decent. There was an organic grocery store I used to go to that always had happy planet juice in the dumpster, as well as fancy $6 a loaf breads among other things. Once thier freezer broke down and some friends got something like 30 frozen pizzas and about as much icecream. They threw it out before it even began to thaw so it was perfect when my friends found it. In another town there was this one specialty bakery that would fill garbage bags with nothing but bread that was sometimes still warm when my friends got there.

You can also ask places if they have anything they are throwing out and they'll just give it to you instead of putting it in the garbage. I once got several boxes of gourmet pastries this way.

Don't rule it out is all I'm saying.
