ID Request
    #7520286 - 10/15/07 05:26 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

OK, I am pretty sure that these have been positively Identified as Psilocybe Stuntzii. I just have one more question; Are these Mature?

Habitat: Found in a garden strip. In wood chips with soil.

Gills: Grey

Stem: Bottom part is light brown, then a line separates the other color from it which is a lighter brown.

Cap: Light brown on outer edges, then strengthening into a darker brown. Has a slight bump on the crown of the cap.

Spore print color: PURPLE!! [(not Grey, as this said before) (thank you jet Li)]

Bruising: No bruising

Location: Picked in Washington Pacific Northwest

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You.

No bruising? Gray spore-print?

How long did you let the cap print?

Cause those look like a psilocybe to me.

Stunzii or Beao? Or something.....

But dont eat them...

Are you sure the print is not Purple or Purple-brown? They are P. stunzii as far as I'm concerned, but if you're sure the print is grey then they must not be what is often referred to as "blue ringers", a common active Psilocybe found the PNW, mostly in wood mulch, but often in nice lawns. Not so frequent in pastures, but they have been found there.

Also, be very aware of the common and deadly look-alike Galerina Marginata.

I admit that I didn't let it sit for very long, which is one of the dumbest things i could have done. Im doing another one now.

If the spore print looks orangish in any way, don't eat them.

You could let them sit for like six hours. Over night would be best. Then you could scrape them into a water bottle (with water in it) and while walking to work or school or in your neighborhood you could spray every patch of wood chips and be like a Johnny Mushroom Seed (spore).

I think I will try the overnight option. I definetly don't want them to turn out to be one of the deadly look-alikes.

Since there is the possibility of them being G. marginata should I ID all of them? I ran a search on Shroomery at large for G. marginata and it said that they can be growing right under P. Stunzii. I'm into having my life right now.

Yours do not look quite right. here is a pic of my Ps. Stuntzii from this season... Notice the white stem and very noticeable blue ring. Just remember with psilocybes... If in doubt. throw it out!!! you dont want to make a mistake with these mushrooms!!!

his mushrooms are a Psilocybe, they are annulate and the annulus looks blue in at least one specimen. if they are from the PNW and are growing from woody debris in that soil, they are P. stuntzii.

--------------------

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

the gills in your photo really do not look right to me. I know this photo is not great but these blue ringers gills are much tighter together.
I am no mycologist but those look a little off to me and I know stuntzii pretty well.

When i pick them in person it takes me 1 second to identify this mushroom and i feel your are a little off. This is just mt opinion

Well with Ps. Stuntzii i do not find very many of them with nipples, except for when they are very immature. His pictures have very noticeable nipples on the caps.

It could just be me but very few of my finds have the same noticeable nipple on them!
Once again this is me giving a ID through a photo so i could be wrong... It just does not seem quite right to me!

There are a couple different versions of P. stunzii, nevertheless I will agree with fliped and ward you away from consuming those, for the lack of a 100% ID.

BTW, Fliped those are some really nice Ringers you found. I haven't been as lucky with such hearty ringers. That's awesome!

*sigh* I wont eat them if I have any doubt, which I do, so that sucks, but thanks for the help everybody.

Just as a last resort though, I will take another picture tomorrow of the whole batch. Not all of the mushrooms had nipples on them, and judging from how small they compared to your Pictures, I am willing to bet they are all very immature. I'll keep watching them for any changes.

Thanks again

Well, you should let them grow up. If they rot before they get big, it could be a sign of high bacteria content in the soil/fruit. Also, it could just be lack of fresh substrate. Well, I'm personally 100% positive that they are indeed Psilocybe and most likely P. stunzii. I would tell you to go ahead and eat them, but there is always a risk of mixed other spp. as well. You should spore print them all, while letting them dry. If any give an orange print on white paper, you should not eat them. Later.

Thats what I am going to do. Most straight forward thing to do. Spore print them all (once they get bigger [if they do]) and then maybe set up another ID request.

You're a very wise man, albeit a pregnant one. hahahah.

I'll keep an eye out for your new ID request.

Meanwhile, I'll try to dig up some old pics of some P. stunzii which might be very similar to yours.

So, prego man, was there bruising after all?
The spore print was purple. We cannot overlook this fact. If the print was the purple-brown color then I would not have a doubt.

Not even trying to make this thing be something active or anything, but the spore print (after leaving it all night, and all day) is light purple on the edges, with the inner a darker brown. Once I find my camera, I will put up a picture of it. Also Ganzig, I have not had a chance to test for bruising today. I will put up results of that as well once I get the chance.
