pf cake problem not pinning
    #7520132 - 10/15/07 04:15 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I birthed my cakes about 2 weeks ago and other than some mycelium grow they have done nothing they are pes Hawiian. there is no pinning and i am starting to worry. i am using the perlite for humidity and they are kept right around 65 degrees should they be warmer should i spray them? i didn't set up a dual chambered trearium. any help at all would be great thanks.

65 degrees seems a bit cold. I'm just going with what I've read, since I'm new to this too so don't take my word for it. But 75-80 degrees would be preferred. What is your humidity?

65 will definitely slow colonization times. You'll be surprised just how much of a difference 5 - 10 degrees warmer will make. Try to keep temperatures steady and do not fluctuate as much. WOOF!

Yes, FAE is one of, if not the biggest, pinning trigger. The idea is to FAE your tub as much as you can while maintaining your humidity. If you can fan 4 times a day without losing your humidity, good. If you can fan  10 times a day and maintain humidity, even better. Just maintain that humidity and keep the FAE flowin. bumpin your temps to 70, if possible, would be good for it as well. If getting it to 74 is too difficult, don't worry about it. Just get it as high (between 70-74) as you can without straining your balls too hard for it.

my humidty is pretty high i use perlite and mist i raised my temp to 75 and i already have some pinning however i now have bluing, they are geting enough water but now tHAT THEIR is growth i am afraid to spray. is perlite sufficent to keep the humidity? there is nearly 5 inches on the bottom.

bluing on your cake is generally bad. Just to check, are you putting your cakes through a 12 hours of light, 12 hours of dark light cycle? Pinning doesnt start without light, and you didn't mention anything about your light cycle in your first post.

Spraying while your mushrooms are growing is perfectly ok to do. Leaving them without proper humidity is probably what will do you in if you don't mist or up the humidity.

Agreed. You need to continue misting gently. Stop misting for a few days when primordia form, but then pick it up again as the fruits grow. Always air out the chamber until the cakes and fruits dry off a bit before closing it back up.

Humidity is at 95% and temp just over 75% pinning has started and is rapidly growing. They have been in a window in direct sunlight and is as controlled as it can get without covering it. For about 8 hours a day they are not monitored so this is my only option. I am really unable to control how much light it gets during this 8 hour period. Is it ok to cover it? How often do I need to mist with perlite and with my humidity at 95%? This is the first time I have noticed bluing. I just birthed 8 more cakes and they seem to have a little bluing as I may have been a little rough with them. How much light can they realistically have without being harmful? They are in my living room so light is really not a problem. Thanks.

its normal for the myc to blue when handling, not sure why your other cakes have just started blueing, my cakes started brusing quite bad but they fruited just fine. Brusing suggests that something is stressing them?? I couldnt figure out why mine blue, i got decent size shrooms and a not bad flush about 20 grams wet, my last flush of a cake was 48 grams wet which was also from a cake that was blueing.

When ur misting if water droplets land on the cake i noticed that this made them blue, try and make sure the mist is a fine mist and mist a few feet above the FC and let the fine mist fall into the FC.

A quick mist after each FAE is fine, as RR says stop misting a few days when primordia show, then start again when the fruits start to grow.

I noticed a huge difference once i started fanning my FC more, when im in i usually do it every hour and give it a mist.

The other advantage to FAE is that contams generaly like still stale air.

You really dont want direct sunlight, indirect is fine.

leaving it for 8 hours is fine, i do the same as i work, i just make up for the fanning and misting when i get home. Sunlight should provide a good light cycle for shrooms,
