Your rye looks almost like some kind of coffee bean.
As far as removing labels, the best way I've found is to soak the empty jars in very hot water for a few minutes then just peel/scrape off the label.

Try WD-40 (if they have it where you're at)...its a petroleum-based household lubricant/rust-buster...i've found it to be by far the best thing for getting labels off in a hurry

lol, it does look like honey puffs... of whatever those things are. ok so now you've got me wondering what kind of place doesn't have mason jars and rye berries . At anyrate are you sure your "rye" is washed well? the starches can stick the berries together something fierce if they arn't washed well enough. And about contams... do the jars smell weird at all or do they have a nice earthy mushroom smell?

I've seen the small one grain white stuff. I's always been when just one spot of LC has started eating the grain. It always spred but took forever.

I'd try mine first, then his.....gotta wash the wd-40 off anyway, or else you'll have one hell of a slippery jar!

Maybe try putting a little gypsum in with the rye. That's supposed to help keep it from clumping so much.

<That grain is called 'black rye'. The other one I found that is available is called 'naked rye', as in the first layer of skin was removed (I'm assuming). I'll get some of that one soon, but I got some quantity of this black stuff so I'd like to use it first.>
If you ever buy rye bread you will have different colors to pick from. They rang from light to dark. They use the "black rye" o make the darkest bread. The darker rye should have more nutritional value to it.

if it sticks too much.. just dont use it... buy some brown rice flour instead... Or go buy rye flower from a grocery store.
