Horsepower

So this past fall season i had a geniouse idea. Horse shit is where most mushrooms are found when they grow on animal shit. Why not let the horse do all the work for me? Idea seemed simple enough. and it worked with great results. I grew before using the PFTEK... not so fun but learned a lot. So with my harvest i managed to make some spore solution. I made a ton. I donated about 5 large caps just for spore solution and ended up with a gallon or so of solution. I had made a few diffeerent solutions and then combined them all when starting with this crazy idea. So im driving to my friend's house who has went through the whole PFTEK with me and i noticed a horse field next to his house that i had never noticed before. I should have, it just didn't click until this day. I got to my friends house and we went to work instantly. This is what we did. We got some straw and hay, probably a quarter bail of each, and mixed it up so it was a thourough mixture. Then using a large plastic bin we threw in about a half a gallon of my spore solution. Had to leave some extra for my next grain grow. Mixed all the straw hay and spore solution until the water had completely mixed in. Then we went to the orse field under cover of night and set out this mixture for the horses next to one of they're watering dishes. We had to scrape the sides of the bin with some of the straw because the spores stuck to the side of the container. Drove past the next day..... no straw/hay. Had to assume that the horses had eated it. After seeing this we went out to the field every day looking for fresh sprouts. next to the woodline of course, cooler. sure enough a few days went past and we had found horse shit with cubes popping out everywhere. The small dose of spores we had fed them acted as a seed kind of for all the garss that they had already eaten. We both agreed that we could get past the smell and the fact that the myc had grown inside a horse, so in the end after drying we ended up with about a QP total. unfortunately its in the end of the fall and we'll have to wait to try our luck again in the spring.
Worked for us, might work for you.

Thats sheer genius..
If there are no shrooms in a field close to you, just feed some spores to the horses/cows! and actually this will almost guarantee that there ar shrooms there for years to come.. because there is no chance that you will find ALL the shrooms in ALL the poop..

Thanks for the laugh...
all of you
You guys are fuckin nuts
The acids in a horses stomach will kill the spores, this is just as funny as the "I fed my cow a spore print but his poop didnt grow shrooms, what went wrong" threads that have been around forever.

actually paul stamets relates a story where a guy orders some horses from Florida .. to WA state .. they pooped in his stall in WA and cubes grew for a couple of years then died out ..

Some spore related horse quotes
http://www.ojibway.ca/mushrooms.htm Tiny coprophilic fungus can be found on fresh horse droppings. The black spore caps are "blasted" away from the manure and stick to a blade of grass to await another horse to eat the spores.
http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab/kids102.htm In nature, Pilobolus fires its spores toward the lighted sky so they land on vegetation and stick to the leaves. When a horse eats the leaves, conditions in the digestive tract activate the spores so they are ready to grow in the dung. Pilobolus is difficult to grow without the assistance of a willling horse. However, I believe I have grown it on sterile rabbit dung

People have been putting caps and sporeprints in their cow's water trough for years to start patches. If you'll search here, you'll find it's been recommended as a method of wild cultivation for at least as long as I've been around. I've never heard of it working with horses. It does however, work with cows. RR

Same here, I can rationalize it working with a cow because they don't have any significant digestive acids in their multiple stomaches whereas a horse uses similar type of hydrochloric acid as humans to aid in digestion - which I would have imagined a spore could not readily survive.

You've gotta be kidding me...
So if i go feed a horse or cow spore solution it will crap mushrooms, that's whats been scientifically proven? god can smite me now.

Don't forget about your horse-sized glovebox. Wouldn't want it crapping trichodermia.

This "cultivation" is the natural process basically, the cycle between herbivore and grass and the mushroom that hitches a ride with it.
Sterilization by digestion is by no means anywhere near absolute. If a horse/cow/sheep eats 1.000 spores I'm sure 100 get through his GI tract still viable, if not more.
RR's adaptation of spores in the drinking trough sounds like a great idea: this way all the animals will spread spore-laden poo all the time. If you got a big farm with lots of beasts its an excellent way to get acres and acres of one Cubie pie after another.
