scifi anime
    #7517762 - 10/14/07 10:24 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I'm a big fan of futuristic, or mystic types of sci-fi anime. I've only seen a handful of probably the most common ones but wanted to see if anyone else has some favorites they could share. My favorites would have to be Akira, Princess Mononoke, Animatrix, and Ghost in the Shell.

Cowboy Bebop is excellent sci-fi anime.

The series of Evangelion could have been better IMO, but the "End of Evangelion" movie is a truly crazy psychedelic mindfuck.

Yeah. Gotta love it. The entire series deals alot with the psyche and shit like that. It does get slow/tiresome at points, but it's worth sticking with.

Death Note is more of an intellectual, psychological thriller type anime. really makes you think. i would not consider it scifi at all although it's really good regardless.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the mecha/scifi anime to end all mecha/scifi animes. i highly highly recommend it. most fucking epic thing i've seen in a long time.

Serial Experiments: Lain (AMAZINGLY GOOD series!)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (series and movies)
Cowboy Bebop (series and movie)
Trigun
RahXephon
Escaflowne
Akira

just to name a few.

Ergo Proxy is nice, somewhat slow moving post-apocalyptic SF.

Dennou Coil has been compared to a cross between Lain and Totoro.

Good stuff both.

Escaflowne is good, although the series seemed a bit juvenile at times. I enjoyed the movie more than the series.

There is also Gantz, which is like...half sci-fi.

Nadia secret of blue water isnt too bad for a series

Nausicaa valey of the wind is an awesome post apocalyptic sci fi anime

Castle in the Sky is another awesome Miyazaki anime thats kind of post apocalyptic- it has a very complex plot though.

neon genesis evangelion was like my first non-psychedelic mystical experiance, and probably as a result one of the more formative experiences in my life.

the key is to watch it straight through late at night.

upon re-watching i realize that you have to be willing to accept the exaggerated nature of the psychological parts of the show.

when the live action evangelion movie comes out i'm going to have to camp outside the theater for a month...
if they ruin it i'll be heartbroken.

So yes, NGE is a must, as mentioned.
Watch eps 1-26, straight thru or over 2 days if possible.
The ending will suck, and leave you in a 'wtf' state. This is why they made the 2nd movie 'End of Evangelion' which effectively 'replaces' eps 25 and 26 for a more 'formal' ending.
So the 2nd movie starts off where 24 leaves you off.
Dont bother much with the 1st movie. It's ass, altho still something to consider if you got into the series.

FLCL (Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri) is a must. Total mind fuck, in a happy/action LSD trip kinda way.

Lain = Shroom trip in a bad trip sorta way. Leaves a 'dark' impression. Interesting tho.

Tekkonkinkreet = wtf movie. You dont watch this for the 'art' you watch this for the mindfuck. I just saw it, and it's so amazing. You'll be glad you saw it.
http://sonypictures.com/homevideo/tekkonkinkreet/
trailer!

Any Miyazaki film of course (or Studio Ghibli). Some of them are a bit childish, but still good, and always unique.

Steamboy (animated really well)

and some more i can't think of.

Epic you want? Try heroic age, whole thing just screams epic. Not like gundam epic (it is mecha tho), but philosophically driven and unique, fate of humanity/universe in their hands epic. Amazing show.

Besides that I would also recommend ergo proxy and paprika.

As far as mystical type stuff, I think everyone on here would like mushishi. its about this ultra basic life form/fungus that infects people and gives all sorts of different strange supernatural side effects and this wandering doctor helps them. The animation/scenery/music create the perfect atmosphere and it's defiantly a slower, more mature oriented anime.

O and gurren langen is great! i'm catching up on that one.

the reason you haven't heard of it is because it's fairly new. in fact, the first season just ended last week. there are rumours of a second season in the making, but i don't know how true they are. we'll see eventually i guess.

The_Ghost: i totally mentioned Serial Experiments Lain.

also, for all you people watching DUBBED anime ... you guys are totally missing out. so much is lost in translation from original japanese to gay ass english.

watch that shit SUBBED, damnit! subtitles are so much better, it's the way it was made and the way it should be watched.

Ah shit, how could i forget Mushi-shi!
Yeah, that is an awesome anime to chill out to. Honestly, if you need to watch something before bed, or if you're angry and need something to relax your mind and change the subjects floating around in there, mushishi is it. ANBU made some great subs of that title, download it from them. AonE also did it well, but anbu's is better quality. Beautiful art, and it's very deep. 26 eps total i think.

Subs are a must in anime. I know a lot of people hate subs, but once you get used to them, they become second nature. I had a friend who was just like that.
The only time DUBS should be trusted, is when the company importing it has enough money to afford quality (read: profesional) voice actors. This is usualy limited to anime movies, since shows would be too long/expensive to hire big names. A good example is any Miyazaki film. You'll recognize some famous voices instantly when you watch Princess Mononoke.

i've only ever seen 4 anime series that have been properly dubbed, and i've seen a fuckton of anime.

they are as follows:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Fullmetal Alchemist
FLCL

those are the ONLY 4 that i will watch dubbed (although i will also watch them subbed), everything else MUST be subtitled or i won't watch it.

my friend hates reading the subtitles but wants to watch anime and wants me to watch the dubs with her. i tell her to fuck off and she can find her own anime to watch because i absolutely REFUSE to watch any anime (other than the 4 listed above) dubbed.

Watched Otomo's Memories a while ago - it was alright. Just watched Ninja Scroll though, which was fucking awesome. Absolutely loved it. A long time ago I used to think people that liked anime were fuckin weird and were into stupid shit - but I've definitely learned why there's so much appeal - Japanese anime is just fucking imaginative and amazing. Anime =

Anybody that hasn't given Ergo Proxy a watch should definitely do so. There are some HD torrents for it. I'll be buying that set when they box it all together.

anyone seen one called Armitage?
It came on late night on sci-fi cannel a few years ago. I think the one I saw was actually Armitage 3. I remember thinking it was very good.

there is Armitage III: Polymatrix (movie) and Armitage: Dual Matrix (movie/sequal).

Tangerines: if you like mecha anime, you will most likely like TTGL. you should have watch an episode or two from youtube first though, just to see if you liked it before downloading the whole series.

I'm currently watching my way through Bleach season I and I love it.
I don't usually like anime, though.
For someone who likes Bleach and Death Note, what are some other recommendations?

Death Note is the shit!
I've got like 37 episodes [no idea if that's all of them], but I'm only up to episode 8.

It's so addictive, but I've been liking Bleach more, lately.

Hmm for something like bleach, you'd probably like D.Gray Man (besides obvious answers like naruto and dbz which I assume you are all ready familiar with but follow pretty much the exact same pattern as bleach). Monster is good if you are really into the mystery/suspense part of death note.

i love ghost in the shell, super slick fighting sequences. i just wish the plot wasn't so damn complicated. still though, glad i tossed up this thread - picked up a lot of good anime to kill time with [maybe i'll write down time in my death note :tongue2:]

Okay, thanks for that Nova.
I need to get into Naruto. I've seen the first couple of episodes and loved it, but I never got around to getting the first season.

It's weird, I used to hate anime, but lately [within the last year] I've really been loving it.
Does anyone think it's a required taste? Because I've had friends who love it and always have.

If you like Bleach, I'd seriously reccomend "Yu Yu Hakusho". The shows are very alike in many aspects, so I think you'd enjoy it.

As far as sci-fi anime goes, I'd reccomend the movie "Appleseed" - excellent animation and voice acting. It starts off a bit slow, but it doesn't take long for it to start rocking.

For those of you who like mecha and/or post-apocalyptic, consider the anime "Blue Gender". Great, great series. Very epic, in a non-epic way (if that makes any sense).

My personal favorites (in no particular order) are:
Elfen Lied
Gantz
Blue Gender
Yu Yu Hakusho
Desert Punk (a bit perverted, but extremely funny)
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Case Closed ("Detective Conan" in Japanese)

I used to dislike subtitles, but after downloading and watching a number of shows in their Japanese format, I've gained an appreciation for the generally superior voice acting in the original versions. Like somebody else said, reading the subtitles becomes second nature.

Ninja Scroll is also good. I felt I'd mention this movie separately because I watched it for the first time while I was having an awesome trip on mushrooms. It made the movie quite a memorable experience for me. I got so into it, I was audibly yelling "Oh shit!" and other such things when stuff happened. Haha.

the ending is amazing. you really have to watch it all the way through, but it's definitely not for everyone. as far as i'm concerned though, TTGL is one of the best animes i've seen in quite a while, and i've seen a large amount of anime in my short time.

It's such a great series, I'm going to be sad when it ends.

Something like that yeah, looks to be pretty kick ass though. Can't lie though, it'll be a bittersweet ending - the series takes a lot of attention to follow. My friend asked me to explain it yesterday and I just told him that's a pretty fuckin tall order. :justdontknow:

i haven't watched death note yet, but i was looking at some pictures of the animation and it looks very nice.

i will have to check it out.

TTGL was pretty good, but Gundam Wing is still better imo. Neon Genesis was a little better, too.

anyone know of any samurai anime that is pretty realistic and kicks ass?

ive watched samurai champloo and samurai x/RK....but i dont know of any other amazing ones. the samurai x OVA's are the best anime in existence to me.

like someone said before, if they are done right they work pretty good. i guess im just lazy and dont like bothering to read subtitles. ive never watched a subbed anime so i dont know what im missing.

anyway, i encourage everyone to watch 'monster'. if for anything i would like everyones opinion on it before i eventually sit down to watch it myself. people have described it as just not another anime but an experience.
