    #7517204 - 10/14/07 07:29 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

hello everyone i just started my first grow a week ago and I'm doing the pf tek( brf and verm). I put my jars in incubator and waited for growth until i opened box the jars were in and smelt a weird smell. the jars have myc on them about 2 inches around top on each jar but no sign of contam....why is this?

I am sorry to say but didn't your jars stall before? I remember reading a post about that before.. I think your inoculation methods might be in question.. What are the details of your spore to incubation process?

my incubation wasn't right temp it was low 70s so i put it in a room and put heater on to raise up the temp to 80.

I think its the temp maybe contams.. before when your jars didn't produce it was the same temp IMO the temp needs to be at least 82.. Others will say less works but in your case I don't think its happening. Yes you could case what you have.. But I guess if it were contams they would be evident by now.. Also to much moisture in preparation or to little can cause stalling as well. Otherwise patience man I am still waiting for some jars its been three weeks baby steps man.

well if it was a sour smell, it's probably a bacterial infection.
the jars will probably never fully colonize.

I colonize jars sitting out on a shelf in the low 70's all the time with
100% success, so that's not your problem for sure.

How long does it take for a quart to fully colonize at that temp?

it depends heavily on how the jar was prepared.

water content percentage plays a huge role.
fluffiness and evenness of the substrate plays a huge role.

it's been quite some time since I've done cakes, but I believe
from spores it took roughly 18-21 days for pints, 14-16 days for
half pints.

I know for sure that quarts of grain inoculated with LC will colonize
at those temps in less than two weeks. I use room temperature
for everything... except fruiting panaeolus.

Just wondering I keep my quarts at about 84 and it still takes about 3 weeks. I don't use them for cakes though I shake them up so it kinda makes it take longer. I imagine it would take a lot longer at 70.

84 is at least 3 degrees too warm. Shaking grains speeds up colonization, not take longer.

One should not colonize jars in a sealed box. The gasses need somewhere to go. A book shelf in open air at 75F to 80F is the best method for colonizing jars, imo.

Then why does it take an entire month for a grain jar injected with and entire syringe of spores to colonize at 82 degrees?

Obviously, something else is wrong. Usually, it's having grains too wet(such as if you used a whole syringe in one jar), or insufficient gas exchange. My quart jars of rye fully colonize in ten to fourteen days at 75F.
