Marcus Aurelius
    #7516970 - 10/14/07 06:33 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

This emperor had his shit together. He was a stoic philosopher and so fucking practical that nothing I have come across improves on what he said. Check out his book "Meditations" But be ready for the ol ego to be put in it's place.

" Oh man, citizenship of this great world-city has been yours. Whether for five years or fivescore, what is that to you? Whatever the law of that city decrees is fair to one and all alike. Wherein, then, is your grievance? You are not ejected from the city by any unjust judge or tyrant, but by selfsame Nature which brought you into it; just as when an actor is dismissed by the manager who engaged him. "But I have played no more than three of the five acts." Just so, in your drama of life, three acts are all the play. It's point of completeness is determined by whatever sanctioned your creation, and today sanctions your dissolution. Neither of those decisions lay within yourself. Pass on your way, then, with a smiling face, under the smile of that who bids you go.

"Accept whatever comes to you woven in the pattern of your destiny, for what could more aptly fit your needs?" M.A., quoted by E.T. in The Power of Now

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (Rome, April 26, 121[2] – Vindobona or Sirmium, March 17, 180) was Roman Emperor from 161 to his death in 180 . He was the last of the "Five Good Emperors", and is also considered one of the most important stoic philosophers.

His tenure was marked by wars in Asia against a revitalized Parthian Empire, and with Germanic tribes along the Limes Germanicus into Gaul and across the Danube. A revolt in the East, led by Avidius Cassius, failed.

Marcus Aurelius' work Meditations, written on campaign between 170–180, is still revered as a literary monument to a government of service and duty and has been praised for its "exquisite accent and its infinite tenderness." [3]

There is an idea of what Govt could be. It seems it is based on the concept of the equality of man. Without that nothing is served that can enhance the human experience. I have not seen such a leader in these dark ages.

Rome was a pretty dark age unto itself... if you were any of the neighbouring peoples. There is a reason no one went willingly, and her history is racked with war and the supression of rebellions in conquered territories.

And besides, none of thier philosophy was thier own, it was all ripped off of the Greeks. All Rome was good at, on her own, was administration and war.

Marcus was one of the unwarlike emperors.

I'm sure the stoic philosophy was ripped off as you say. That's what we all do we rip off everything we can know. It's just a matter of what you emphasize.

Veritas says that Greece was the place for a woman in this world.

All Rome was good at, on her own, was administration and war.

I have a feeling that there was more to it than this.;)

Right, they were also pretty good at gluttony.

Now as far as Roman age historical figures of interest, see below. Boudicca led an uprising against Rome that saw thousands of Romans slaughtered and 3 of thier cities destroyed. Those who defended thier people against the virulent sprawl of empire are more interesting to me than those who held the reins of a gluttonous, land devouring monster. A personal preference, anyway.

I picked up "Meditations" once. It was awe-inspiring. So well written and thought out that I was genuinely surprised it wasn't more widely read and raved about. It was perhaps the most eloquent thing I've ever come across. Unfortunately, I never finished it (I was in India and reading the resident copy in a cafe).

Well, well, well, I certainly see where you are coming from. But not I. I care little for any cultures, only individuals. That's why I named the thread Marcus Aurelius rather than " I really love the Roman Empire".

haha, fair enough. But remember, my friend, that no matter how much of an individualist one is, no one can be separated from thier context. :smirk:

True but in the case of philosophy the context is all humanity. All humans are flawed and no culture produces perfect humans. In fact I find much more similarities within all cultures than differences. Humans are, well, human. Hell, even American culture produces a few decent humans. Even Canada might as well. Even our favorite fantasy primitive cultures or native cultures produced a few good people. See what I'm sayin?

IMO, I'm one of the best. Still, I admit to being almost totally fucked up. I don't know what that says about humanity at large.

If we weren't so fucked up, there would be no growth, no striving towards a better life..and that's why Heaven is a no-no..
