Alternatives to College

So I'm just looking for some suggestions here. And I don't mean like "Go to community college!" or "Take online classes!" I'm about 100% confident I'm wasting my time and my father's money being here right now. Just looking some good ideas, something to help me get on my feet and live independently for possibly a few years. I'm hoping some people here might have some ideas that I haven't come up with or read about yet.

if I wasn't in college - I'd move to another country and start from scratch. that's just me and that's what i plan on after i'm done with school anyway. you could take up an apprenticeship - or peddle weed - or sell kitchen cutlery. The question is, what do you want to do in life - and is college going to help you do that. If not, then don't go.

Seems like your best bet is to learn a trade.
If I could do all my schooling over again I'd be a certified nurse anesthetist. In total, it's about 7 years, but starting salaries are about 150K.

open a business it doesn't have to be a storefront you can have an online business
get an internship, apprenticeship
just get a job and slowly move up the business ladder
there are a lot of things to do besides college but having a degree under your belt definitely helps in the long run and making a living with just a high school diploma now a days is hard work

If you're confident in your abilities then [stay in college] put together a portfolio of your work. Whatever it is that you're really good at, put examples and cite references in a big folder and at your job interview explain that you've been doing that type of work since you were young and that you're an autodidact (self taught). If they like your stuff, they'll hire you. You won't make as much as someone with a degree but you'll definitely land the job.
Good luck!

Just get a normal 'low paying' job (which is still high paying by world standards) and learn to enjoy life with that income.
College wont make you happy, and it wont make you rich (automatically). Its a useful tool if you have a particular passion, thats all.
If you need to get financially independent right away, get a tip job. Single moms raise their kids off of that money. You cant afford the luxuries many americans think are necessities, but you can afford a one bedroom apartment and an old used car for sure. I was able to be 100% financially independent with a pizza driving job at age 18. One bedroom apartment, gas in the tank, and even a bad of schwagg once and a while. Good living

get into a career where experience is worth more than a degree. I'm telecom and right now if someone less experienced but with a degree applies for the same position i do, i'd be more likely to get the job.

when i dropped out of college i started to translate books & publishing them by my own publishing house. it has no major income except it pays for the printing costs but it's something i've been interested in doing and it's been fun so far. this also gives me some good stuff to write on my CV in the future.
find something you love to do & discover how to make money off it.

As of right now my plan isn't to drop out of college forever. I just shouldn't be here now because I have no interest in anything. As much as people say "oh it's okay if you don't know what you want to do" there comes a point when it's not okay, and I'm almost there. I'd like to think after I figure it out I'd be willing to come back (unless, of course, I didn't have to.)
On that note, I didn't mean a different way to start a career and be okay for the rest of my life when I said an alternative to college, I just meant some things I could do temporarily (a few years) to be independent and get some experience in different things (preferably unique/interesting, but I won't push it.)

a good way to make some money and pass the time is in the service industry. you could try to get in a low position (backwaiting, barbacking) at a decent upscale restaurant. work there for a few months, prove your worth, and once a server leaves, maybe you can fill that spot. serving at a nice, expensive upscale place can bring in some real money.
you're what, 19? 20? something like that. if you stay at a place like that long enough, once you hit 21, you could probably start training to tend bar, then get into a late-night bar scene.
i suppose that depends on if you're into that kind of thing though. i mean, i'm basically just describing what i'm in the midsts of doing, except i'm hoping to finish school while doing it. i know i enjoy the work... and the servers make like 150-300 in tips per night, and the bartenders make 250-350 in tips per night.. which is damn decent. especially if you're still young and keeping your bills low.

Have you ever considered the monastic path?
It requires a lot of dedication and it's not for everybody, but it is a viable alternative to the lay life. If I weren't in school right now that is almost certainly what I'd be doing. But I am glad that I'm in school, even though I am uncertain (as you are) about what I'll do with my degree and whether I'll even be able to muster the discipline to earn it.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

well jew, some people absolutely hate working jobs like that. you may find out you're one of those people, in which case this would be a terrible path.
i don't mind it so much. in fact, i enjoy it, far more than any other job i've ever worked. i dunno, i feel that despite the high turnover rate, there's a sort of job security in it, especially if you are good at it and have worked in high-end places, simply because these types of establishments are everywhere. or maybe i'm just jaded. but i plan on just finishing school (i've given up on my gpa), getting my two degrees, and then just working as a server/bartender for a few years while i collect myself. figure out what i want to make my career, if anything.. keep my bills and my level of commitment low and my flexibility high so that i can travel europe, or asia, or canada, or wherever the fuck else.

Yea dude there's definitely some nice places in columbus you can work at and make some nice scratch at (I knew some people that worked at the fish market and the cheese cake factory that made a killing). You can even make some decent money working at a sportsbar I worked at bw3 through most of school and got to make decent money while keeping an eye on the sports games so that worked out for me.
Also just outside of cbus both fedex and ups have locations I worked at fedex for a while and ill tell you right now it sucks ass but you they'll pay for your school, give you decent money and you can get insurance through them if you need it.

Okay, this has nothing to do with the topic, but why the FUCK is it BW3? I mean, I only count two "w"s in "Buffalo Wild Wings."
On another note, I'm not staying here, besides campus this city blows dick. It's like a really big Syracuse with a capitol building in it.
I think if I decide to go through with this I'll try the restaurant business and continue selling (knives, not drugs) on the side.

Haha yea I feel ya man I think all of ohio is pretty shitty myself I'm plotting my escape right now actually. I wanted to head out west but just got an interview with a company in flordia so we'll see what happens.
I can't even tell you how many people have asked me about the 3rd "W" in bw3 I even had people call in not order anything just to ask that haha. The third "W" stands for "weck" buffalo wild wings and weck. Weck is a special type of bun they make where they put flour and rock salt on it and grill it. I think its pretty nasty almost no one orders it.

Haha yes it really is that shitty and the weather is a major factor for me I'm done with snow... I'm ready for warm weather all the time. I really don't understand why someone would come to ohio if they weren't born here, corn fields just aren't really that great. I mean cleveland is alright and columbus is alright but neither are great if you ask me. At least in most other states that have lots of snow there is good skiing and whatnot but ohio is so flat there's none of that, its just an all around shitty place.

cali really isnt all that hyped up to be what it is...
-yes, the weather is nice, very nice especially if youre in socal. -the traffic sucks royal balls. -club scene is overhyped and can be really fucking gay -rent is expensive as hell, especially in SF the best part of cali -shitty heroin (tar only) etc.
aside from the weather, corn fields sound great to me right about now. a serene place to just "get away" can be a serious stress reliever (though i prefer the desert since i like hot, dry areas). of course the good heroin would be a bonus hows cinnci compared to columbus?

Cinci is ghetto as fuck I'd definitely say worse than columbus.
I just came out to cali (first time west of tennessee for me) this summer and had a blast in LA.. I'm not really much of a club person but the weather was perfect every day I was there all the drugs I tried out there were WAY better than what we have here (I can't believe what they try and pass of as cocaine here after sampling the cali blow). I don't fuck with heroin but I am friends with a few people that do not sure what the quality is but they seem to enjoy it, I'm sure its cheaper anyway haha.

ok, ill give you that much. stimulants, x, "rave" drugs are significantly better in cali. and drugs are much cheaper, yes. heroin & downers, the midwest and east coast own cali's ass.
psychedelic drugs seem to suck on both ends unless you grow your own shit or get yours from a vendor.

This isn't a bad idea. I made 2,000 doing a month at a fish hatchery and it was actually a lot of fun and pretty easy work. Some jobs there will make you up to 5,000 a month.
There's lots of jobs you can go work a few weeks on location and then go home to spend the money, check some out.

What about computer repair? Check a few circuits and replace modules. You could do that anywhere in the world.

back when i was 19, me and some friends wanted to go on an Alaskan fishing boat thingy. long story short...1 of us went, and he only made like $3000 on the whole thing and it lasted for almost 3 months...he said he would never do it again.

dude get a job, or go ride a bike and make your own food and clothing, or go surf all day, or go meditate. this is your life, find something that makes you happy and do it. and try not to hurt other people in the process.
