Should i birth my cakes?
    #7516676 - 10/14/07 05:12 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Its kinda longg read. its been 2 weeks now since i knocked up my cakes. I started with twelve cakes. Three became infected, i made three new ones, they to got sick so i remade those ones again i am waiting to see what happens. Three are showing mild grey spots no myc pretty sure they are going to be useless i stashed them away to see what happens. Two others started out very nicely but then obtained a small amount of grey mold on them but their myc is still a very nice brilliant white. So i stashed these ones away as well to see what will happen. So...i have four that are looking niceee at the moment. 1 appears to have mycellium all the way through it. the other 3 have mycellium scattered around the edges none on the bottom yet. Im going to birth the fully cultured cake. The other two? Should i birth them because im not sure how much longer it is going to take to let them finish culturing. I wish i had better results but i guess 4 is pretty good for my first run at it

thanks

Wait 4-7 days to birth your fully colonized cake. The outside may look colonized but you should let the inside catch up. For the three cakes that are colonized the edges just wait for them to finish. If you were to birth them I highly doubt they would produce any mushrooms.

Flip the 3 partially colonized jars upside down and let the fully colonized one "reinforce itself" for a few more days. You really need to work on your sterile technique. Seriously, 2/3s of your jars got infected by the same contam. That's not good.

it can take around a month sometimes to fully colonize. you could birth them early, and if you do you should get rid of any uncolonized substrate. but i personally would wait till they are done. if they stop growing completely and stall try smacking em hard and flipping them upside down.

Thanks yea i should wait a little bit then. YEa im kinda pissed about this contam, i was pretty sterile but not enough, i used the boiling sterilization style im going to invest in a pressure cooker. i think im going to get more jars and get some new spores and whatnot. But i am going to continue on with these cakes see what happens. Ill try that flipping technique. I have another question, from one cake would there be an average amount of mushrooms i could expect?

if you get some new spores, look into liquid cultures they will save you $$ and speed up your inoculation time.

the amount can vary wildly either way. i tended to get around 200-300 wet grams per cake per flush, but 90% of that is water. ive also had much more AND much less than that though. trial and error eh? heh.

well you edited what i was responding to out of your original post. but i was saying, if you order new spores, do a search of the forums for "liquid culture" because you could save yourself alot of trouble. plus its fun to do.
