Jars not colonizing

I'm getting frustrated but trying to be patient and find out what I'm doing wrong. My quart jars with WBS always seem to get some sort of slimy bacterial thing, no colonization, and the jars that colonize at all go at a snails pace.
Any thoughts why? I was even wondering if my incubator is too warm and is interfering with growth. Or if it's because I don't rinse off the grain enough before PCing. Or maybe I just need to switch to rye.
Please help? My spores are all from reputable venders but this lack of growth and then greasy contam stuff is making me realize I need to get back to the basics.

You know what, I think my incubator is 3-4 degrees hotter then it needs to be. Colonization occurs at 86 degrees and I think mine is closer to 89. Shit.

turn the incubater down closer to 79... and it sounds like your wbs is probably too moist. try drying it off a bit more before loading it up in jars.

Could be your jars are too wet. Then get slimy when incubating. After you wash your WBS, let your WBS dry (hour or so) before you jar it to PC. Doc's Bird Seed Tek is a good starting point.

Thats definatly too hot, while lowering your temperature will not stop contams, contams will favour this, i think mycelium growth slows above 86 F
Room temperature is just fine, i incubate at 80F without any problems.
How long was it before the slime appeared? Did you get the moisture content right?
I have only tried grains once (popcorn) and i failed with green mold growing.
theres so many factors that could be the problem, not pc long enough, high enough temp, inoc in unsterile enviroment......

Thanks for the feedback...after hearing the responses and researching a little more I now see that they were both too wet and also the temp was too high. I will definitely be on the lookout to ward against these issues from now on. I guess I just needed to talk about it with people!
Thanks.

do you use spore syringes or liquid culture to inoculate?
I use liquid culture and I just make an excess of constantly refrigerated liquid culture in a baby bottle, put RTV sealant in the nipple to act as a sort of rubber stopper for syringes for no air exchange. Then fill with 200 ml purified water and 20 ml of corn syrup. Then put a marble inside this is so you can stir up the floating mycelium so it doesn't clump together. Wrap in several layers of coffee filters and rubber bands to hold the filters on. This insulates it so it doesn't melt. Then wrap in foil and pressure cook them for about 40 minutes. Make sure to raise you metal disk from your cooker up with some empty jars so that the bottles are above water. Let them cool down completely before unwrapping. The nipple will swell up due to pressure and if you try to unwrap it it will burst. Once cool inoculate it with a regular syringe an of spores. It will colonize the corn syrup and there will be viable mycelium to draw up into a syringe and you can use more than your typical 1/4 cc's per hole since there isn't a cap on how much you can make of liquid culture and if you keep it refrigerated it will stay fresh for 6 months maybe more. That means you can as soon as you inject your jars and they colonize in roughly two weeks skipping the when the spores have to germinate. I use finch seed for my cakes it seems to colonize faster. Just soak finch seed overnight in a pot of purified water with foil over it. Next day use a colander to strain off all the excess water and then fill up to 1/2 below the rim and fill with straight vermiculite and cook the same as regular cakes. Do you tape your holes? I usually tape the holes and then put the foil on the lid first and then screw the ring down on the foil. That way when there cooled just use a sterile fork to scrape the foil off and inoculate with the liquid culture and then i just keep in a cooler so the temp usually keep them close to the same temp. They will incubate themselves. But all together I have a %100 colonizing rate no contaminated ones that are done 2 to 2 1/2 weeks tops. The bird seed gets more air then brown rice cakes cause of the extra space between the seeds. But you can use the liquid culture on any kind of cake method and it will cut of some growth time.
