Thinking outside the Box
    #751615 -

im fairly new to growing mushrooms and i had an idea, but im not about to give it up until i test it myself. One thing i wanted to know was: Will the mycelium stop producing fruit at a certain age or will it continue to grow as long as it has water and nutrients?

Thank alot

zz

It will continue producing fruits as long as it does not dry out and it has enough nutrients.

You can add different or more layers of the same thing and allow the mycelium to colonize new substrates to keep it alive and rejuvenated. for example:
From grain to dung to regular potting mix to another mix, and scratch it up and add another layer on top (of the same or diffrent mixture) and it will colonize as well, creating brand new healthy frosty mycelium.....
Well I'm getting real sleepy now, so I hope this makes sense.

Well, it is true that new mycelium will keep growing, but what you do is like cloning and youll have to make sure to change the substrate you are using often so you wont get strain degeneration. I dont know how many times you could go with different substrates but I assume it has some limit until the strain degnerates.
