Theres lots of shitty rap, but then again, there is plenty of good rap.
Common is one damn good rapper. And I DO NOT listen to rap whatsoever. I'm just saying, that now all of it is bad, not all of it is good.

the problem is gangsta rap isn't gangsta anymore.
its all about rapping about your Ferrari and shit. It used to be about being broke.
the problem wit rap these days is that its lost its populist appeal, and only a millionaire can relate to it.
old school biggie smalls and stuff of that ilk is the shit, though. I consider that classic and timeless, and it will always be in my playlist.

Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

in general, i do not like rap... or anything else that's so mainstream that you would hear on a Kiss station.
but Common... I love me some Common.
I remember the first time I heard "go"... it was that one winter where I stole a bottle of adderall from my sister and had a couple weeks of amphetamine induced insomnia (although not as intense as real tweak, I'm sure) and I would turn MTV at those ridiculous morning hours- you know when they ACTUALLY play music videos... and I just kept backing the DVR up and watched that video over and over again while standing out on my apt balcony smoking cigarettes. in the freezing cold.
anyway that was a weird memory.

dude - i love three six mafia too, but they have recently made a few songs that i feel are utter shit and don't represent the three six i used to know. but i agree they are definitely on a completely different level, soulja boy being the equivalent of a biological disease to the already hopelessly infected rap genre

Good replies all around. And apparently I am a Dumb Cunt to the fourth power as of this writing. FTW!!
Common is good, Talib Kwali, Mos Def, Deltron 3030, I like what Nas is doing for mainstream.
Gangsta is not gangsta anymore.

Jehst - Independant
All these people going on about deltron 3030.. heh that guy seriously lacks lyrical innovation. Most of his rhymes don't even relate; he's like the family guy of rap music.
I know all of you americans will turn your nose up at british hip-hop (I do the same to your hip-hop.. its hard to get past the accent).. but listen to these:

the revolution is all in lyrical content the art has permeated global culture by now.. it has assimilated to all styles of music. it's up to the artisans to make it last.
