Tool is my favorite band. I don't listen to tool every time I trip, because it's fucking powerful. I have to be in the right mood to listen to tool when I trip, but I am listening to tool right now :smirk:

Video games are a waste, I feel the same general way when I am tripping and the other individuals involved want to play video games. It's really a waste of a trip in my opinion.

But playing Tool is good.

Aenima is my favorite

i havent listened to them on mushrooms before, but i have jammed them plenty of times on LSD....

Tool + my CEVs = heavenly

i notice so many shroomerites with tool avatars, quotes, and names...its awesome

i chose usefulidiot, myself...not sure why, but when i was deciding it i was listening to tool and usefulidiot glared back at me on the screen...so i went with it...

for real, 10,000 days has just as much if not more powerful than lateralus...just not as dark and ominous sounding....but its still there, that otherwordly spiritual vibe thats really hard to describe...but its still there
:edit:
however, Schism on LSD will always have a most special place in my heart

Tool is definately genius, have you guys heard about the fibonacci sequence in the song lateralus? Blew my mind when i heard about it. The youtube video below explains how it works. I always get goosebumps when i listen to that song.

it makes me kinda sad tho, that they're nearing the end of this tour....i always get sad like this at the end of their 2nd "current cd promotion" tours (yes that really DOES make sense, dont say "huh")...cause they always go *POOF* and fuckin vanish and go into hiding for 5 years or so....which is probably has something to do with why SOOOOOO many ppl didnt like Days..too much time to get used to one sound and vibe while the band and their music are evolving and growing while they're M.I.A.....of course, only 3 of them drop off the scene...Maynard's always gonna have some kinda new lame side project that will rear its ugly head just as soon as Tool goes into hibernation/incubation....ok yeh..APC is a good band...but PUSCIFER?! with a debut album titled "V is for vagina"?!....whatever:rolleyes:

Well... Tool is also my favorite band and I've only seen them live once at the big day out (in NZ)... It was a brilliant show and at the end maynard said he would probably be back at the end of the year on tour.

I've been checking the site but no date posted so looks like they won't be coming back this time round. Really sucks as I am soooo keen to see them again. Their live performances are amazing :frown:

I was an arms length off the rail for most of the Tool show at Bonnaroo. It was amazing.

Anyone ever re-ordered the tracks on Lateralus? It's worth a listen. I don't really know if it was supposed to be that way, but it lines up pretty well.

the order is 6 7 5 8 4 9 13 1 12 2 11 3 10

The one time I've tried mushroom was the night before they played Coachella recently. The only songs I had on my laptop were Pushit and Thirdeye. Seeing them the next day definitely felt like a release.

Thank you.

I skipped school the day Lateralus came out. I was amazed by the artwork. I was amazed by the music. I was amazed by the spiritual meaning I was able to find in it. I decided I wanted that tattooed that day and it finally became a reality this past Memorial day.

I have about 15 more hours of work to go though.

i dont get, like or listen to tool.
i dont understand it at all. sorry.
iv lisened to all of opiate. iv lisened to all of lateralus
nothing clicks. its all floaty un enchanting.
iv seen that fibinochi video before. meh uninpressed. fibinochy sneeks its way into pretty much every thinkg in our moodern lives. from our credit cards to the food we eat. its all infused with golden ratio's.

now for me. tools driving and often unimaginative riffs (just me talkin here) make it almost boring and not worth straing my ears to figure out what maynard is saying.

i need inprov. i need spontinaity. i need the pressence of somthig otherworldly. not a $10,000 light show and creepy ambiant imagry.

i mean i love alex greyas much as the next human but some times i think tool is just not steping out at all.

again just me talking
ima go put on some good ol 74' :gd_icon:

well no one's forcin u to like em:tongue2:

the fibonacci deal in Lateralus didnt just "show up" on its own....they (tool) put it there intentionally..or so they said in some interview i read somewhere a while back...

as for their riffs being unimaginative, i guess i can see how one could think that.....out of all of their songs, there are only 3 that dont use drop-D guitar/bass tuning (yeh i know Justin plays a 5 stringer but whatever)....and there's really only >so< much a person can do with a guitar tuned to that....

and the $10,000 light show and creepy ambient imagery....well, they ARE genre'd as "art-rock"....A LOT of the videos that are played during their shows were done either by Chet Czar, or their guitarist/founder Adam Jones and his wife Camella Grace (spiraleyes.com)...yeh theres a lot of Alex Grey's work too, but not more than the others.

there is definitely an otherwordly presence to their music, to me at least, i dont get how you dont get it:eek:

and i agree 100% about maynard's singing....hopefully the other 3 members of the band will do something on their own when maynard's off doin his side-project crap.

So you say u need improvisation and spontaneity...do you like Smashing Pumpkins at all?  The shows from >their< new tour have been nothing short of amazing.

Their lack of improv is what I really enjoy about them. Hardcore fans obviously catch the subtle changes they make in songs, but other than that they do an amazing job at recreating the music live.

to those who think Lateralus is "dark"... I'm not sure you "get it"

notapillow... i assume you've had some intense psychedelic/spiritual experiences

Parabola

Quote:

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. hold on, stay inside...
This holy reality, this holy experience. choosing to be here in...

This body. this body holding me. be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

Alive!

This holy reality, in this holy experience. choosing to be here in...

This body. this body holding me. be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion...
Of what it means to be alive

Swirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this
Chance to be alive and breathing
Chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. remember. we are eternal.
All this pain is an illusion.

Lateralus

Quote:

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
Lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
Lets me see there is so much more and
Beckons me to look thru to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
To bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to
Suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
Im reaching up and reaching out. Im reaching for the random or what ever will
Bewilder me.
What ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no ones been.
Well ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no ones been.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.

Both songs, both musically and lyrically, are fucking brilliant

and i'd hardly call either of them "dark"

in fact, i think it'd be the other way around

lol@dopey mcgee...fair enough, but it was mostly billy and jimmy on the earlier cds too...james and d'arcy didnt contribute a whole lot during recording (except for MCIS and machina)...but hey whatever floats/sinks your boat

i dont mind dark. infact i get off on weird crzy abstract horribly insains shit.
but in that sector i have to say les claypool is king. lyricaly, musically, and energy wise.
i like tools message. i just dont think they deliver it well.
the song parabola in particular.
thas basicaly my whole deal sumed up in a song, however i dont agree with how they sumed it up, i could wright a better song on the subject, and i intend too.
i respect tool for there inpact on people and for the ideas they share with there audiance but as for the music

parabola is based on a phrygian mode, which makes it inherently dark >sounding<, the lateralus album as a whole, is primarily dark >sounding<, but lyrically, its not dark at all except for that art bell recording at the end:thumbup:

Tool is awesome.

if you cant understand the lyrics, look them up. The lyrics play a big role in my love for their music. If you dont hear the lyrics, your really missing out on what they are all about. IMO.

Evidently it disappoints you compared to lateralus for some ungiven reasons. So go ahead and keep on illogically enjoying lateralus and dismissing 10,000 days as disappointing because you don't get it, you're the one missing out  [lololol]

Or we can hear why 10,000 days disappoints you, I can't wait to hear it :yesnod:, and then there will be something to work with. [lolz!]

Unless someone includes respectable thoughts on why a piece of music doesn't impress them, doesn't really matter what it is, I assume they don't get it. lol!!1 Which is the case a lot :awesome:

notapillow,

I actually just got into Tool this year because of Bonnaroo, and wanted to become really familiar with their music, even tho I usually don't like "hard" music... i tend to like "chill"

I just started listening to it, often in the background sometimes. Occasionally replay a song I liked. The more I listened, the more I picked up on the amazing instrumentation, Maynard's powerful vocals and lyrics, and simply began to love what they do. The concert just solidified that, and now they're one of my favorite bands.

if it weren't for bonnaroo, sort of forcing me to get into them, I probably never would've given them an honest chance, but boy am I glad I did.

if you like their lyrics, but thus far dislike their presentation, i suggest keep listening to it... even in the background. it'll probably grow on you because, at least in my opinion, they are that good.

no i think you missunderstand. i DIS like there lyrics. and there overall stage pressence.
not to compare apples and orenges but jerry garcia stage pressense was anything but livly, he stood half asleep half nodded out wavering back in forth trying to find the right lick. his intention and care are easily seen through his placid pressence on stage. i dont want my rock stars to be dripping in sweat screaming purly obvious messages at me. i dont like idols,
i like my musicias to be as humanised as possible. now dont get me wrong, i know tool set out to be as big of an "art rock" group as the could, but its just not for m

I guess performances like these..

can't touch the awesomeness (to some people) of grateful dead

I would post some grateful dead videos but they bore me too much to try and pick out a "good one."

I guess I would rather have an insane multimedia experience by a bad ass band like tool, then fall asleep watching the grateful dead 'jam'.

Not trying to piss on the grateful dead, but they never have blew me away.. maybe I'm missing something. To me you are caught up on the art aspect wayyyy too fucking much pillow. Tool has their show, and then they add to it.

You know operas are music, and visual? You know, like.. more than one input? It's too understandable why going form grateful dead to tool would be a hard transition though lol.. I don't remember anyone bitching about pink floyds show "art."

It adds more to the show, it doesn't define the music.

well great. thats explains why you guys are so fulfilled by it and im not.
im listening to "parabola" right now. for me this is just simplistic drivvle, i get it, i know it , iv seen it, whatever. it boars me i guess

"Swirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this"

sorry if i sound crass but...uh duh

i mean this is truly a deep and inportent message but just going straight out and saying it complelty cuts all the artistic value out of it.

robert hunter can wright a song that will make you think, then think again, then think somthing you never even thought of thinking. everysingle time somthing new is unearthed.

"you can borrow from the devil
you can borrow from a freind
devils got 20 doller bill
your freinds only got 10..."

Since everyone is on the topic of lyrics, heres some from AEnima:

Third Eye

Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.

On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

In... Out... In... Out... In... Out...

A child's rhyme stuck in my head.
It said that life is but a dream.
I've spent so many years in question
to find I've known this all along.

"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running?"

Shroud-ing all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar.
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song...

"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much.
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running away?"

Prying open my third eye.
So good to see you once again.
I thought that you were hiding.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing the tail of dogma.
I opened my eye and there we were.

So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason.

Prying open my third eye

H

What's coming through is alive.
What's holding up is a mirror.
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn this piss to wine.

They're both totally void of hate,
But killing me just the same.

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.

And I feel this coming over like a storm again.
Considerately.

Venomous voice, tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty.
Drags me down like some sweet gravity.

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.

And I feel this coming over like a storm again.

I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me.

Without the skin,
Beneath the storm,
Under these tears
The walls came down.

And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes,
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times.

I could have cried then.
I should have cried then.

And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.

I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,

And considerately killing me.

Grateful Dead are one of the greatest bands of all time... it's easy to miss their magic at first. I did for several years, until one day I was lying back, stoned, with one of their CDs playing just for kicks, and it downright hypnotized me. Since then I've loved them. It's magical music, and if you can't see that it's probably because you haven't given them a chance (possibly due to their almost lazy-seeming presentation?).

 im sure they feel that way about bus and tool. its just not my level. its idiotic to try and say one is better, smarter, or more artistic, than the other. as far as im concerened tool and the dead are treading extrely close on the same artistic vein. but art, like all things is relative

What cd was it? I see so many people enchanted by the Dead, but have yet to hear anything that would pull me in that deep. Touch of Grey is one of the only songs I would hear and know it's them.

I'm not 100% exactly which one it was, but I believe it was Live/Dead. That album is a fantastic example of what makes the band so great. Don't skip the really long jams, just sit back and let it wash over you.

you gotta feel it out for yourself. check out the live stuff. and pretty soon you will develope your own favorite songs, eras, venues, and lyrics

Yeah, I watched the Schism video, and stuff was all super elaborate but I couldn't tell the difference between what was me tripping and what was the video.

I think tool is great, and surely the grateful dead is too, however what I have heard of them didn't have me all that captivated or interested. I have tried to find songs I really liked, with no luck so far. What are some songs/performances I should look at?

wow this toke off... Philosophical are intense and require a great amount of time to explain, but while listening to aenemia the song and the album the thoughts of religion and stupidity came across, it was more like a rage if anything, but i couldn't do anything about it. I was stuck in my chair zoned into this worm hole of a vision on the T.V. Impossible to be active on this stuff... but mentally so much is going on, in fact i wish i had done one of my English essays right then and there, it was about beliefs and belief systems . i could have written the man a book if he wanted one. i am a pretty good writer sober so i will definitely give writing a try messed up. I am sure i am not the only one who wants the thoughts that you had when you were twisted to reappear in your heads again, they are amazingly profound .

I have to write a paper on existence and essence, fulfillment in finite and infinite realities. The first half has to examine an argument regarding such things. In the second half, I must constructively criticize and acknowledge my beliefs on the subject.

Basically the next time I trip I'm going to write the second half on the comedown.

i don't find tool very special
they sound like any other rock/metalband to me
schism is quite good, but that's about it
to my ears, most rock/metal really sounds the same in the latter years

The only real thing that sets Tool apart from most other bands is they style they play in. the use all kinds of weird as shit rhythms, complicated time signatures, and in several songs, their drummer is playing in two time signatures at once.

They do ridiculously difficult to play technical stuff like it's nothing, and I think that's why so many people like them. Personally, I think complexity can be overrated, as some of the best music I've ever heard had some of the simplest pieces to it. However, I can still appreciate what Tool did, and what Maynard Keenan is still doing with his new band.

Its not the music that makes them amazing its the meanings behind the songs that makes them special they can be very deep.. do some research and you will see that alot of their songs dont seem to be what the sound like

and tool by any means should not be considered the best rock band, thats just stupid and i am sure Maynard would say so too. they are different flavor and deserve to be respected, and should be considered music. alot of people really do mess up the idea of music, you should never compare music at all its all different, its like trying to compare colors its just stupid don't do it. its all based on person preference.

See I love tool and like GD. I am a very analytical/mathmatical person and Tool appeals to me in that way. The exactness. The straight forward lyrics without the BS in between. Math is a universal language and one I understand very well.

and first time I shroomed I listened to Third Eye...and it REALLY opened my eyes persay.

just my 100 cents.

They have amazing sound textures. Musical appreciation is a skill that you have to constantly improve. Once you get it, you can tell what's good and what's bad regardless of if you like it or not. Tool is the kind of band that, if you're a real musician, you have to at least acknowledge the fact that they are extremely original in the way the sound, and the way they present their music. And their musical ability is mindblowing, timing is crazy.
