i dont mind dark. infact i get off on weird crzy abstract horribly insains shit. but in that sector i have to say les claypool is king. lyricaly, musically, and energy wise. i like tools message. i just dont think they deliver it well. the song parabola in particular. thas basicaly my whole deal sumed up in a song, however i dont agree with how they sumed it up, i could wright a better song on the subject, and i intend too. i respect tool for there inpact on people and for the ideas they share with there audiance but as for the music

parabola is based on a phrygian mode, which makes it inherently dark >sounding<, the lateralus album as a whole, is primarily dark >sounding<, but lyrically, its not dark at all except for that art bell recording at the end

Tool is awesome.
if you cant understand the lyrics, look them up. The lyrics play a big role in my love for their music. If you dont hear the lyrics, your really missing out on what they are all about. IMO.

Evidently it disappoints you compared to lateralus for some ungiven reasons. So go ahead and keep on illogically enjoying lateralus and dismissing 10,000 days as disappointing because you don't get it, you're the one missing out [lololol]
Or we can hear why 10,000 days disappoints you, I can't wait to hear it , and then there will be something to work with. [lolz!]
Unless someone includes respectable thoughts on why a piece of music doesn't impress them, doesn't really matter what it is, I assume they don't get it. lol!!1 Which is the case a lot

notapillow,
I actually just got into Tool this year because of Bonnaroo, and wanted to become really familiar with their music, even tho I usually don't like "hard" music... i tend to like "chill"
I just started listening to it, often in the background sometimes. Occasionally replay a song I liked. The more I listened, the more I picked up on the amazing instrumentation, Maynard's powerful vocals and lyrics, and simply began to love what they do. The concert just solidified that, and now they're one of my favorite bands.
if it weren't for bonnaroo, sort of forcing me to get into them, I probably never would've given them an honest chance, but boy am I glad I did.
if you like their lyrics, but thus far dislike their presentation, i suggest keep listening to it... even in the background. it'll probably grow on you because, at least in my opinion, they are that good.

no i think you missunderstand. i DIS like there lyrics. and there overall stage pressence. not to compare apples and orenges but jerry garcia stage pressense was anything but livly, he stood half asleep half nodded out wavering back in forth trying to find the right lick. his intention and care are easily seen through his placid pressence on stage. i dont want my rock stars to be dripping in sweat screaming purly obvious messages at me. i dont like idols, i like my musicias to be as humanised as possible. now dont get me wrong, i know tool set out to be as big of an "art rock" group as the could, but its just not for m i prefer cryptic storytelling and hauntingly unclear messages. not just straight up preachyness

That's exactly what I get out of listening to TOOL.

Because I'm sure once you hear a tool song once you completely understand it right? Lol don't kid yourself
I guess performances like these..
can't touch the awesomeness (to some people) of grateful dead
I would post some grateful dead videos but they bore me too much to try and pick out a "good one."
I guess I would rather have an insane multimedia experience by a bad ass band like tool, then fall asleep watching the grateful dead 'jam'.
Not trying to piss on the grateful dead, but they never have blew me away.. maybe I'm missing something. To me you are caught up on the art aspect wayyyy too fucking much pillow. Tool has their show, and then they add to it.
You know operas are music, and visual? You know, like.. more than one input? It's too understandable why going form grateful dead to tool would be a hard transition though lol.. I don't remember anyone bitching about pink floyds show "art."
It adds more to the show, it doesn't define the music.

well great. thats explains why you guys are so fulfilled by it and im not. im listening to "parabola" right now. for me this is just simplistic drivvle, i get it, i know it , iv seen it, whatever. it boars me i guess
"Swirling round with this familiar parable. Spinning, weaving round each new experience. Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this"
sorry if i sound crass but...uh duh
i mean this is truly a deep and inportent message but just going straight out and saying it complelty cuts all the artistic value out of it.
robert hunter can wright a song that will make you think, then think again, then think somthing you never even thought of thinking. everysingle time somthing new is unearthed.
"you can borrow from the devil you can borrow from a freind devils got 20 doller bill your freinds only got 10..."
