Mushroom ID, UK (Unlikely to be active)
    #7515348 - 10/14/07 11:03 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, just went out into the garden for a ciggarete and noticed a large patch of these mushroom. I dont think they are active but they seem to be growing near where I threw out a few spent cakes about 3 months ago. Its now autumn and they have had a lot of wet weather. The cakes in question were Cubensis b , not native to the uk and although im pretty sure these arnt Cubensis they do look slightly simillar.

They are growing over a large area although most of the mushrooms seem to be concentrated in small patches very close together ranging from 4 to 10.

This is in the south of the uk, the mushrooms have an earthy mushroom smell, white gills although they are not mature and I had to remove the gill covers they are very close to opening. The stem is pretty firm, white and fluffy inside, almost hollow just like the cubensis I grew. The cap is brown with darker areas towards the tip, the dark bits are like soft stubble. I will take a spore print when I get the chance but they will be gone by this afternoon in case our puppy eats them. They also feel slightly dry/damn and dont bruise noticiably.

Here is a few pictures, anyone got any idea what they are? I have never seen mushrooms like this in the UK and they arnt in any of my ID books.

They are still imature it looks like and have their veil covering their gills. Maybe wait for them to mature and for the veil to fall back and see how they end up looking.

I don't know if you can take spore prints with a veil or not.

I cant really let them mature, this is at my parents house and im going back to college in a few hours. I picked half of them and put them in a paper bag to take back with me "just in case" Il take a spore print when I get to college but my parents will amost certainally send the lawn mower over them.

The dog has already started trying to eat them and if anyone has got a siberian husky puppy then they will know they will try to eat EVERYTHING...

Well, you are right that they are not cubes, but they do look really similar. They look really enchanting. Or maybe like they could be some expensive edibles. But I dont know. You should look for some cold weather actives at your college campus too!
