Potting soil and Chalk as Casing layer
    #7514704 - 10/14/07 03:57 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Since I'm not natively English speaking I've kind of misunderstood "soil" as potting soil instead of peat and vermiculite that seems to be the most popular mix for casing layer. I've been using potting soil and chalk and it worked but the yields have not been as big as those everyone seems to have on shroomery. For instance I mostly get fruits on the edges and not in the middle of the boxes. How much could potting soil affected this?

It might not hold as much moisture as peat/verm, causing the most of the moisture to be concentrated near the edges of the casing. I'm guessing your casing pulled away from the walls of the container it's in, and you're getting side pinning from that.

Next time, if you stick with your mix, try wax paper over top of it to create a little pocket of moist air just above your casing layer.
