OH man, Amanita Muscaria PNW ID!

Got a book on N American Mushrooms, and this thing fits the description pretty well.
I was on my way home and realized I live near a horse ranch. I parked my car across the ranch on another road leading away from it, whipped my flashlight out and said, "Meh, why not search the side of the road on the way." I found some Boletes of some kind, but I'll get to that in another thread. So I'm about to cross the street to scan around the fence of the ranch. "Hmm, let's look a little more." I turn the corner, and BAM!" I see like 20-30 of these guys, some babies, some flat capped adults ranging to about 4 inches wide. Needless to say I'm freaking out, I get in my car with one sample and head home.

Habitat was slightly mossy grass under and not under a low hanging tree.

Yeah, I'd like to see how those veil bits spread out or not. Gemmata is very similar, right? A. Muscaria is the only mushroom I hunt for, and I never find it.

I knew I should've gotten a bigger one. I wanna say they spread out, but can't remember exactly. I do know that from the pictures I'm looking at of Gemmata, the ones I have looking nothing alike. I'll bring the camera along tomorrow morning and snap the whole batch.
Man, I'm really hoping I found the real deal this early, it's only the 3rd day of my first hunting season. It's so fascinating, I'm seriously thinking about minoring in mycology.

Yes you are superior in every way. Did you even look at my username? It's not like I've been at this for any amount of time. Did you pick on kids who were smaller than you in the playground? 'Cause that's what you're doing now.

Well its just hard to go near trees and not start finding amanitas if you live were they grow.
And there all that you hunt, and they are bright red.
I mean, its just about the most visible shroom there is and they get huge.

Read your field guide carefully. Google amanita and read, here and across the web. One of the most important characteristic for A. muscaria is at the base of the stipe. Amanita is not a family you want to be gambling with.
They're extremely photogenic tho, get some habitat shotz

That's why I'm looking for them. They're a good one to start with (hunting, not consuming). I've also become pretty good at identifying galerinas. Which is good, because I don't want to eat them ever.

But I am serious, you only have to walk were medium sized trees are to start finding the amanitas. I have found so many muscara, one time I started drying a haul in my oven then paniced cause no on could tell if my stem had the spikes or not on here so I threw them into the furnace.

Update: NEW PICS
Upon picking up one of the big ones, a white sticky residue(spores?) was left on my fingers.

they look right to me, but u need to give a nice close up shot of the base of the stem for anyone to be 100% sure... concentric rings of scales at the base of the stem are the defining characteristic with a. muscaria. <see the pic i posted above>
undoubtedly those mushrooms will give a white spore print but that doesnt differentiate them from other amanitas at all...

there are about a million of these things around Seattle U. I'd be too scared to try them though. I have a friend who likes smoking the skins, but I'm not sure about that either..

Jayms yours look exactly like mine did, I was never able to get someone to say that they could 100% id mine cause the "scales" were not very well visible like yours.
And some I do not see any scales but they could be under grounds as I was having that issue to.
This is why I didn't eat them cause I just rather live than die over a trip that has bad ratings lol

Yeah, they don't seem to have the rings they should. Who knows though, I'll dig up one or two and check.

I'm curious, since these specimens appear to lack the rings of scales, what's the next most likely ID of this mushroom?

those are concentric rings of scale like structures, those are Amanita muscaria and it's your call. most people don't like them enough to try them a second time and some people have a thing for them. i highly recomend drying them and then finishing with heat.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Like monkeyheaven, I too am wondering, what would they be if they weren't? I'm still kinda hazy about trying them without being 200% sure.
A guy from the UK on another forum posted a way to cook them.
Quote:
If you're going to take Fly Agarics you need to prepare them properly first, also dosages vary, maybe start with 10g. You dont want to eat them fresh, put the caps and stems in some salt water for a little while, this will flush out any little critters hiding away. Then put them into the oven on a baking tray, gas mark 3-4 for 20-25 mins, baste any of the juices that leak out back onto the mushrooms.
The heat converts the ibotenic acid into muscimol (the psychotropic substance that makes you trip) which is what your after.
