white puff ball shrooms?

so There's Malabar growing on millet spawned to coir/straw and coffee. over the past couple bins Ive noticed these white puff balls of what kinda looks like mycelium growing on the substrate. they are white like mycelium but kinda puff out spiky like.. it looks like hair almost like a balled up rodent or something heh.
the substrate fruits fine the shrooms don't have a racing stripe or anything. because first this i thought was vert. so this recent bin had a puff ball thing in the corner. today i checked on the bin and the puff ball is pretty big.. like a golf ball. i said this isn't right and ripped it out.
it turns out to be very dense. the outside is like super super thick mycelium spongy almost. so i cut it in half. the center is like the base of a shrooms. a big glob of shroom with super dense mycelium covering it. so i squeeze the water out of it and let it sit. it bruises blue inside and out.. so it must be shrooms of some sort.. but why? what is this stuff? Ive never seen it before. its probably weighing about 1.5 grams or so once it dries its like i said a super dense shroom ball with ultra thick mycelium on it..
any thoughts?

EAT IT! Then tell us what happens if you survive!
EDIT: Get an isolate of it, too, and see if you can reproduce it. You may have stumbled upon something pretty rare.

They're mutants. Fairly common. RR

there's another puff ball thing growing in there. ill let it go and see if it does get super big. giant basketball shrooms lol..
someone else has to have had this happen before. i was trying to think if i had some chemicals around the substrate that would cause mutants like this but i don't remember ever having anything around it.
i dunno its kinda freaky.

read what rr said. Id try to grow it up, make sure there is plenty of water cause im sure it will prolly require more and grow more rapidly then a shroom as well

Isolate it, and if you can get any kind of continuity out of this weird mutation, then you have something a lot of people on here would like to check out.

in my first grow, i had a few of those. They are just as good to eat/trip on as any other mushrooms that grow out of your substrate. And they take a much longer time to dry. Very convinient to eat in my opinion. Just pop it in your mouth while it's fresh, chew a little bit and swallow.

I just posted in another thread about this. I got these on about half of my six cakes and I was worried they were some sort of mold. The largest of mine is currently about the size of a quarter. If they are mutations as rare as people have said I don't know how I would have 3 separate cakes with them but what do I know...
So what do I do with them? Let them grow? Pick them after they reach a certain size?

well they are probably from a lack of fresh air exchange. That is where i went wrong in my grow, I'm sure of it.
So you just need to fan your cakes more often.
You can let them grow, and eat them when they are done growing. They will, like anything else that reaches ripeness, stop growing after a certain time.
Most of mine didn't grow bigger than a quarter.

Thanks. I'll try that. It is a huge relief to know it's not mold. If it was this would be the third batch in a row that didn't yield anything.

Some of those cakes fruited. The two with the white puffs on them did not. The ones that did yielded a few big mushrooms each. Should I try to cold water shock them for the next flush? What do I do with the cakes with the weird white puffy things on them? Put them in the water as well?

dunk them in water for a few hours. anywhere from 3-24 for some. I did mine for 12 overnight in the fridge.
After that, wet your cakes, and roll them in vermiculite. The vermiculite will stick right onto the wet cake.
Then fruit them just as you were before. Remember to fan your cakes more often though.
My suggestion if you want to fan them enough, but don't have time to do it is...
Put a loose fitting top on your FC, or put a hole in it (not enough to dramatically lose humidity), and hook up a fan to a timer. You could put something over the hole(s) you make in the FC so that no dust gets blown in by the fan. But make sure it's something that lets air through, but not dust, Like a hepa filter, or something like that. Fans seem to collect dust a lot.
