Lutes perhaps?
    #7513116 - 10/13/07 06:49 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Found these yesterday, and another patch with much larger specimens today...

Habitat: wood chips
Cap: 1-4 inches across, smooth, cracked membrane in some specimens (see pics), spike like bumps very pronounced on some specimens (see pics) yellow/slightly orange with brown towards center. Thick flesh.

Gills: Attached, not crowded, colored as cap when young becoming brown with spores. Spore print brown.

Stalk: faded ring apparent on some specimens, Fibrous, Thick, 1-3 inches high, 1/3 inch thick.

Other: Odor apricot like-but fading quickly once picked. Decaying specimens had green tint. bruising not apparent.

*We had a lot of rain in NJ this week, and temps dropped for the first time this season from upwards of 80 degrees to low 70's-60's*

Figured I'd add an image of one of the larger ones I found today...

there is no purple on the stalk, but the darker portion of the cap can pass for burgandy;as its more reddish brown than chocolate brown...is it possible that they might be lutes???

It is very difficult to determine an exact species when it comes to gymnopilus. from my own knowledge, i know that looks like a gym for sure i just dont think it would be luteofiolus. possibly juniosus

Unfortunately I think I have to rule out juniosis, as the substrate involved with both findings consisted entirely of decorative woodchips. I really want to believe they are Gyms but some of the traits point to some bizzare pholiota. Its also possible that they are Tubaria furfuracea, They dont quite look like any images of T.F. that ive seen, but they do match the classification key.
It sucks because now that they are dry I think i can see green tinting on the stems/gills...isnt that how it always is though? we want to believe that greening is there so we start to see it no matter what lol.

That looks like the buggars I found last year.

I agree, it isn't luteofolius. That species has more of a reddish cap with prominent fibers.

This is Gymnopilus luteofolius:

I really dont think its a tubaria. Im still persistent on a gymnopilus species. yet, i dont know all of the sub species either. If you can swear that you got green tinting on them and its not the imagination i would keep em. possibly get a microscopy if youre willing to get the effort.
